Has anyone ever sold a domain name? Someone contacted me and wants to purchase a domain name that I have for a company they want to start up and has offered me $750 for it. Has anyone had any experience with this? Is that a fair price? To me it's free money but I was wondering if domain names were worth more and I'm just uninformed.

Thanks :-)

Mike

Mike, domain names can be worth a LOT of money to a company as it helps them enormously with branding and advertising. 750 sounds low to me but I'm not in the business.

If you owned "continental.com" before the airline bought it -- it would have been worth a heck of a lot of money to you!

That said -- if the URL you are selling is "bobscandystore.com" and you're being contacted by Bob -- then you might consider yourself lucky to get $750. If you go too high, he might figure that "bobscandy.com" could work just as well.

Do you know -- were you contacted by an agent or lawyer vs directly?

I can't imagine a small start-up business would have the resources to pay lots for a URL. On the other hand, if you happened to register a URL that is now going to be P&G's new brand of soap -- well -- then you may strike it rich!

I guess there's really no way for me to know for sure because they could be putting on a front but the email basically said "Hello, my name is Mr. New Business Guy. I'm in the process of starting a company focused on small business services. One of the names I'm considering for the project is yours and I saw that you don't seem to be actively using it. I wish I could say I had a ton of money to offer you but I'm doing this bootstrapped and self-funded, and I am decidedly not wealthy. I can offer you $500 for the domain. I hope that's an attractive offer to you as it's a fair percentage of my budget."

When I replied saying I'd consider it, he upped it to $750

I actually went to a website where they evaluate domain names (it seems there's a huge market for buying up names and trying to sell them) and my appraisal was less than his offer.

I sort of decided i was going to let it go for his offer anyway because I wasn't actually using the site anymore, I'm not greedy and five hundred free dollars always sounds good to me

If you counter with $1500 you can always return to 750

I worked at AT&T when they announced that it would split itself and form a new equipment business. I was assigned to the new company. We muddled along without a name for a few months. Then it came up with the name Lucent Technologies. There was a rumor that the name leaked out and someone had taken the domain lucent.com and had set up an "under construction" at that name and that the company ended up paying $30,000 for the domain name. Further, the rumor said it was a Lucent employee, but the company kept that embarrassing fact a secret.

The value of anything is whatever you can get for it. If this guy is legit, and don't count on that, he may be able to afford $750 or maybe even $1,500, but probably not $30,000.

I get lots of spams, though, offering to buy domain names, so be careful. This offer could be real or fake. It sounds real at this point.

Maybe you could auction it off!

I suppose. He could also decide that he doesn't want it for that much and I always say that 50% of something is better than 100% of nothing. I'm not using the domain name anyway but I can always use another $750 dollars

I almost hate to admit this but... After reading about the development of an organization in the newspapers for over a year, I decided to check out their website. Low and behold, they didn't have one. Hmmm, I thought. Wonder what would happen if I registered it? They now have a really stupid Domain Name for the organization! If they want it, they can have it, for let's say $10,000! There are a small handful of people who know about this and they all think it's pretty funny. Chances are most MOLer's would think so too.

cybersquatting

Buying a domain name that reflects the name of a business or famous person with the intent of selling the name back to the business or celebrity for a profit. The Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act of 1999 authorizes a cybersquatting victim to file a federal lawsuit to regain a domain name or sue for financial compensation. Under the act, registering, selling or using a domain name with the intent to profit from someone else's good name is considered cybersquatting. Victims of cybersquatting can also use the provisions of the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy adopted by ICANN, an international tribunal administering domain names. This international policy results in arbitration of the dispute, not litigation.

I know someone who recently sold a domain for about $20,000. A broker was involved, so it wasn't obvious who the real buyer was.

I'll let worldwebs.com go for $250,000

Arno,

If you haven't done so already, take whatever measures you can to secure your domain, because there's a fair amount of domain theft that goes on. Make sure your domain status has LOCK on and make sure your access to the e-mail account that your registrar has on file for you is correct, functioning and secure. And make sure to check the e-mail on that account regularly.

"I'll let worldwebs.com go for $250,000"

Jamie,

Dave's website has the message "Hi There" That was one of his characters "Freddy Boom Boom Washingtons" famous sayings on Welcome Back Kotter. I wish I could find a way to make money with all this useless information.

what's the domain name?

upjump.com

I needed a website to put some stuff on a few years ago and and I heard that song Rapper's Delight and 'upjump the boogie' stood out so I just decided to call it that. It's not an amazing name so I don't think it's worth 10k and since it's just gathering dust, I'll just sell it.

Pretty good name, simple, familiar, catchy - definitely worth $750.

It's pretty hard to determine the best price you can get without knowing the true need for it and who this guy is representing. But if it's not being used - $750 is a nice piece of change.

Seeing as he's already upped his offer 50%, I'd counter with $1250 or $1500, hoping to get $1000.

I'd also be wary of a scam.

Speaking of, if one has a domain that is worth some money, how would they go about finding a buyer? Woodstock's wife has closed her store, and is thinking about not re-opening. But her domain name is still registered to them...
