Do you have an unspayed tomcat? Posted on January 23rd, 2006 at 04:34pm Asking price: Details: I want my two children to experience one litter of kittens before we fix our cat in April. I would like to borrow your tomcat. Thanks. Please note - I am not the poster of this ad, and have no interest in any tomcat - spayed or unspayed!

Maybe it's just me but I think that that is a crappy, selfish, short sighted reason to have kittens. If you want your kids to learn something important then teach them how important it is to NOT allow animals to overproduce. Take your animal to the vet and have it spayed. This world is over filled with unwanted cats and dogs, please don't contribute to the problem. (I'm not addressing you Bill, but rather the poster of the ad.) |

"how shortsighted, selfish and stupid!" Having kittens? As long as they find their way to a good home who cares? I think you people are over-reacting.

Do you know how many hundreds of thousands of kittens and adult cats are looking for a good home on any given day of the week? Do you know how many hundreds of thousands need to be euthanized every year because there are not enough good homes? Do you know how many more die slow painful deaths on the street or at the hands of sadistic human beings? Do you know that every humane organization in the civilized world advocates for spay and neuter programs to decrease these numbers? And now you have some idiot who wants to add to that problem just so their "kids can experience one litter of kittens"? Seems to me that goes way beyond just "stupid" and "selfish!" |

Looks like I should have posted this under soapbox rather than here. I was looking forward to amusing comments regarding the lucky tomcat! |

Meandtheboys - Some would say the world is overpopulated with humans as well. Perhaps we all should follow China's lead with the one child laws. Call me what you will, but I still do not see a big problem with this. As I said, as long as all those kittens are taken care of what is the harm in it? It's not like this person posted an ad that said he would have the kittens and then kill them all by boiling them alive. I think that the only thing that really goes beyond stupid is some of the posts in this thread so far. |

I thought all unwanted kittens and cats were dropped off behind of Great Wall where nature was allowed to take it's course. |

What disturbs me most about this quote is that there is no mention of what would happen to the kittens once they were born and the object lesson was at its end. Does this advertizer also want the children to experience raising the kittens and caring for them through the kittens' old age? If not, what lesson would the children learn when it comes time to abandon the kittens or put them up for adoption? |

I sent a nice nasty email telling the person I can decided if she was stupid, selfish or both. I pointed out how idiotic she is to intentionally bring an additional litter of kittens into the world when there are already so many animals already in the over crowded shelters. I suggested she call the shelters and adopt an already pregnant cat. The said never mind. Why not get a couple of hamsters instead. |

Cheeseburger- Have you been to any of the area shelters lately? There are more animals in need of loving homes then there are available homes. And since you don't seem to have a problem with this are you willing to insure any kitten born as a result of the loaned Tomcat finds a good home? |

JTA, you sent a "nice nasty email"?? Isn't that an oxymoron??? ...but I have to agree with you. That ad completely absurd and I can't believe it was approved. It has got to be a joke. |

Oooh Deidra- If you only saw what I originally planned to send. Compared to that, hehehehe... I wonder if what she intends to do is considered animal abuse? What I don't understand, why on one hand it appears she is trying to be a responsible pet owner by getting her cat fized, yet she wants to get the cat pregnant on purpose. |

Oh man this is more nuts then first thought. I was able to dig up a phone number of the person who placed this ad (not hard to do when you use you real name). I spoke with one of the 'children' who happens to be 17 years old. The poor kid says he thinks his mom is for real and said he's tried to talk her out of it with no luck. From what he knows, his mom hasn't given much thought to what happens to the kittens once born. Prehaps if each of us sends the woman an email stressing to her how unwise it is to bring even more kittens into the world, she might reconsider.

if anyone's interested there's a stray cat in my neighborhood which is prepetually reproducing. I received a notice from SO Village telling me that they had rounded up the feral cats - but the motherlode remains free. Its been a few months since the last litter, so I'm sure she's already pregnant - which would avoid the need for a kitty cat stud service. |

Okay, so the ad was blunt and offensive to some, and still a hint of compassion is evident, and the idea of changing the laws in the US to one child could be something to consider, ( it is too late in this home, btw) I do have to say that MOL's reaction to unusual statements are what this thread continues to be about. I read alot, and though don't have as much time to respond as I used to, you always bring a smile to my day. Thanks, and good luck with the Tom Cat. |

There is no limit to the topics that someone on MOL will become incensed about, to the point of calling someone's home in anger. I'm glad no one saw my ad looking for kitty porn. |
