I got an email from St. Barnabas's Center for Reproductive Medicine and Science. It said I can get $8,000 for being an egg donor. If I could ever produce an egg, Id expect alot more than $8,000, because of the miniscule chance of that happening. I was curious though (not about being able to produce an egg...Im comfortable in my knowledge about not being able to do that)...so I opened the email. This was the picture attached to the header...next to it was written "Become An Egg Donor"...and "Women Ages 21-31 Needed" (I do not fit into that demographic group)... and "You Have A Gift To Give".
I guess you have to look like them to donate an egg. They look awfully happy...maybe because of the $8,000..maybe because they really arent "donating" eggs (is it donating if youre getting paid for it?). Maybe they are happy because they realize they have a gift to give (for $8,000). Why $8,000 too? Who sets the price? I then checked out how I ever got on this list...it was because I am registered with vault.com (that is vault.com, not The Vault...vault.com being a human resources-oriented website), and the bottom of the ad email said I am subscribed to receive sponsor emails (which I did on purpose since some of those sponsors are in the same business Ive been in for years). I was a bit more curious about why the Reproductive Group at St. Barnabas would be a sponsor though...I know an aspect of human resources is recruitment, but I thought this sort of recruitment went a bit beyond the corporate job scope. OK, enough musings on this for now.

Hank, I know you well enough to know that you've laid (layed?) plenty of eggs. |

Hank, Maybe the last name Zona is confusing them???? (Zona is the outer layer of the egg...I used to be a cell biologist, and this is one thing I remember) I just don't think you are going to fit the profile desired by potential parents with fertility problems.... To be serious, I follow this industry, and can tell you that how much to compensate an egg donor is a very hot topic, and has been for years. Most mainstream clinics are at roughly this level, feeling that it is fair compensation, given the many hours that donors are giving in appointments, injections, etc., as well as a general anesthesia procedure. It is a time consuming process. What is far more controversial in the field is the bidding up of donor fees for "special donors" (Ivy League grads, top caliber athletes, etc), which can go far higher! |

I remember seeing a poster for the egg donor program on the train and then realizing as I read it that I'm so old, not even those desperate for an egg donor would even want mine....I wasn't thinking I was old until I saw that ad.... Oh - and I don't look 1/2 as attractive as any of the women in the ad you posted above, so I guess they wouldn't want my eggs anyway, even if I were under 31.

Its OK, LilLB, my hair isnt as fabulous as the models' hair in the picture (of course, their ear hair isnt as fabulous as mine)... I did post it part out of amusement and part out of curiosity...so thanks for continuing the former, Jeff, and thanks for continuing the latter, Susan. It's also good to know another meaning for my last name (knowing a few others in various languages, including the Hebrew meaning of my last name which isnt terribly flattering). Im sure eggs (and their donors) are graded, some being Grade A...Im also sure the price wasnt set arbitrarily. |

So, do vegans who donate eggs get to have theirs' labelled "organic"? I seriously thought about it a few years ago. But, at 38, was "too old". The going rate then was $5k. What the hell; I'm not using them. But, Susan is right. The fertility drugs that the donor has to take & the harvesting are a nasty process. The high $$$ is probably the only way to get a woman to do it. Also, as I get older, I find that I have ethical issues with fertility treatments. But, I sure as hell won't go there, because it is a very personal issue for every person who wants to be a parent. |

some girl friends and I, in our late 20s, thought about it too...but then we realized we'd probably have to stop our hard-partying ways, so we decided it wasn't worth the money

If I donated eggs I think they would label them "fried." |
