Looking for something different for lunch, or better? On Springfield Avenue just off Prospect, you will find Piast Meats & Provisions. While this place has been on the Avenue for years as a manufacturer of meat products they have recently opened a retail store area. If you are looking for something different for lunch I recommend getting a roll and have it sliced, then purchase 8 slices of Filet Z Indyka and then 8 slices of Baleron Gotowany-Wedzony. Warm it in the microwave, add your own mustard and enjoy. While I do not speak nor read Polish, I think I have found a Turkey and Bacon sandwich. Now to go with that, go to the cold case and get a tub of Salata Z Czerwonych Burakow and have a beet and onion salad that is out of this world. Yesterday I had the Salata Jarzynowa and it was great. It is a vegetable salad of some sort, I have yet to identify all the parts, but it is very good. I tell you that this is a lot better than the same old lunch from the other local places. I was told that the meat loaf was very good, and I agree as I did have a taste from a friend; however, I have yet to figure out what item in the meat case it is. Oh, English is barley spoken so you do have to guess. So far, I find the guessing to be rewarding. Later, George

I think I see a trend on Springfield Ave.

I always thought that place was a front for organized crime...I will try it though. I've been to some great Polish places in Queens, I'd like to compare. |

I posted about this place once before, and it's excellent. I'm very excited that they've turned into more of a storefront and become more accessible. I've tried the beef jerky, and it's very good. Not flat like the traditional american kind. The kielbasa is smokey and unbelieveably good. And they pretty much always have hot stuffed cabbage in the back, for about $1 per roll... all you have to do is ask for it. (That's one english term they do understand.) There's another sauerkraut and meat dish called bigos that's often in the refrigerated section - about $3.50 for a large container, and it's also very good. Like you, i'm trying to branch out and figure what else everything is. It seems like whenever i go, i'm the only one not walking out with $70 worth of meat and a large container of beet soup. I often try to write down the names of the interesting-looking things i see, but somehow, i always lose the slip of paper by the time i get home to look it up! But you're right, deciphering what everything is is half the fun. =-) |

Ok, that is a problem. Stopped in to get lunch only to find 26 people in line waiting to order. 30 minutes later I had my Pieczen Rzymska (a form of meatloaf, as translated by the person in line behind me) and Boczek Gotowany ( a Polish bacon). A sliced roll then microwave, mustard and lettuce once I got back to the bead store and, it was worth the wait.
