I say ABSOLUTELY. This show is simply beyond repair. I just watched a painfully unfunny skit about Target on the heels of an even more painfully unfunny skit about a sweater. No one is ever going to confuse this stuff with Theodoric of York or Nick Rails at the Autopub Lounge. Infomercials are funnier. |

I agree. The show hasn't been funny or had a huge breakout star in years. Many, many years. |

Is Saturday Night Live still on? If so, does anyone above the age of 14 years and 2 months watch it? If so, why? |

Wait wait, I object. Jack Black was on in December and it was hysterical. The now infamous "Lazy Sunday" rap was on and it was the best stuff I've seen in a long time. And Scarlet Johansen was good last week. I have to say, though, that amy Poeller is NOT good on the news. Next week is Steve Martin. Will Tivo. (Sben- how was your movie?) |

The movie was great. Which leads me to believe that your view of SNL is also, um, uh, oh never mind. |

It should have been cancelled after the 81-82 season. I'm really really serious about this!! I haven't watched it for 25 years |

Sorry about the sidebar everyone...sben- glad you liked it. I can get very cranky sometimes - maybe it clouds my senses. I still say it was boring, would have been better if the audience was corraled deeper in to main character's world (not just his sexual forays). Too many close-ups of the main character also left me yawning. I kept waiting for something great to start happening. He was the director too...Okay, fellas, zoom in on my handsomeness one more time. I did like the tree falling in on the house scene though. That was funny. |

The show has been on for so long it will probably never be cancelled. Take it for what it is, a bunch of bad writing that relies on a combination of outrageousness and physical comedy. I say, if you get a laugh out of 2-3 skits, its ok. IMHO...people are just less patient. They don't want to sit through the bad stuff to enjoy the the small amount of good stuff. The news can be funnier, I just think the timing is a bit off, the dialog should move faster. |

I only watch it very occasionally because it's so bad. I tried it last night. It was immensely boring. The only time I've seen it otherwise is when it's embarrassingly infantile and stupid.

I think as long and Lorne M wants to do the show - it should be on. You can't get land shark every year. New comics need a place to be seen. Mad TV is also great. the real comedy is Sunday mornings from about 6a-11a

A few observations: 1 There's a tendency to put the golden years on a pedestal. Go back and watch them one by one. A lot of clunkers just like now. The big difference is, it was revolutionary back then and now its old, and the rest of TV has caught up in coolness. Despite its long funk, there have occasionaly been brilliant skits by the succeeding casts, viz . . 2 Will Ferrel is as talented as anyone who has ever been on the show (but largely suffers from the same inability as the rest of the SNLers, except for Murray and a bit of Murphy, to jump to the big screen) |

I think you’re right about the so-called glory days of SNL. There were a lot of great skits, but a lot of clunkers too. Generally the first 45 minutes were funny, but the remainder of the show was just filler. I was always an SCTV guy. I think that show was much funnier, although that too was weird. Rather than petering out at the end of the episode, sometimes SCTV was bad the whole way through. More often than not it was funny the whole way through. I don’t get the appeal of Will Ferrell. I can’t stand Adam Sandler and Jimmy Fallon. When I think about it, I’d have to say the best cast may have been Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Dennis Miller, Chris Rock and the late, great Phil Hartman. Though I probably only saw those shows as reruns. When they were on I was in college and sitting around watching SNL was not something I was going to do on a Saturday night if I could help it.

I'd like to take a moment to say that I thought Jimmy Fallon was not funny - and the whole lauging during the skit thing he stole from the carol burnett show was only funny on Carol's show. |

Yes, PH was very talented. fogot about him. I would add that, in its short run, the Kids in the Hall was consistently funnier, weirder, fresher, smarter than SNL. |

SNL may be on thin ice, but there are still some great sketches. http://www.youtube.com/w/SNL---Always-Be-Cobbling?v=b1V3pb3hnRY Cocoa is for closers. Fantastic. This is reason enough to keep it on the air. http://www.youtube.com/w/SNL-Narnia-Rap?v=1DHu2hO6_Bo The Narnia Rap is as good as anything they've done in the past several years. And if you get Alec Baldwin or Christopher Walken you can guarantee at least one great sketch. The news is much better without Fallon, but Norm is still my favorite. The current cast is far from the worst, yeah, I'm looking at you Tim Kazurinsky, you too Colin Quinn and don't think I've forgotten about you, Nora Dunn and Victoria Jackson. |

Worst ever SNL cast member (though I can only claim to know about 50%). Mary Gross. I doubt she's ever done anything funny in her entire life. |

Certainly the list of bad and medicore cast members is far longer than the list of good (or great) ones. I think the curent cast is pretty good. I never liked Jimmy Fallon in most sketches (or on the news), but the Boston sketches were funny. And thank god Cheri Oteri is finally gone. Besides, it only makes sense to cancel SNL if there's something better. What should NBC do, move Live from the Apollo up an hour and a half? |

I was ready to cancel, but the Chronic- what-cles of Narnia has had quite an effect on me. I think Andrew Samberg may be really good. Check out his prior work on the internet with "Awesometown". http://www.youtube.com/w/Sup-Chip%3F---Awesometown-pilot?v=1Ju-bQQPgv0&search=An dy%20Samberg http://www.youtube.com/w/21-Questions---Awesometown-pilot?v=Mxh5-bn39-g&search=a ndy%20samberg%20awesometown Weird? Yes, but also funny? J.B. |

I think it's Adam Samberg. I think he's cute. Also, the claymation called "Christmas Time for the Jews" sung by Darlene Love was very funny. It aired the same night as The Chronic-what?-cles of Narnia (also called Lazy Sunday)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yb7Z0HpRxl4 |

Don't forget Brad Garrett...he sucked something awful...good thing he glommed onto Julia Luise Dreyfuss!!! She's got the money... not to mention related to the Dreyfuss financial family. I will give Brad Garrett credit for writing Julia's last show where she was a Jazz singer. I thought it was smart and well written...to bad the critics panned it |

Dano -- you mean Brad Hall. Brad Hall and Julia Louis-Dreyfus were on SNL at the same time. It was during those dark years where it really wasn't so good. Brad Garrett was on "Everybody Loves Raymond". The "Lazy Sunday" rap is really very clever. I think Chris Parnell also deserves some credit for being talented. Also, one who is missed (in recent years) is Darrell Hammond. Does anyone remember the when the following cast members were on the show: Billy Crystal Randy Quaid Anthony Michael Hall Christopher Guest |

Eric Wertheim, you are right on about both romanticizing past seasons and KITH. SNL was good in the early days because you could feel the live-ness coming through. Nowadays, there's no reason to show it live. There's no energy. They constrain themselves because of the format. It's hard to compare KITH to SNL since they used taped segments, but it was brilliant. Some of my favorite bits of their's weren't even funny, just surreal. Did you ever see Foley's movie, The Wrong Guy? |

Ffof - you totally made my day. Young!! Love it. I was pretty young when the originals were on. Loved Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman, and especially Gilda Radner. Now that I am thinking about SNL, I always enjoyed Mike Myers and Dana Carvey (Wayne's World, Church Lady, etc.). There have also been a couple (more recent)sketches called "Cork Soakers" and "Colonel Angus" that were hilarious. There was that really weird period long ago after the entire original cast left....the Charlie Rocket years. Or year. VERY brief and very bad -- with the exception of one very funny Tim Kazurinsky/Mary Gross sketch where Tim was "The Iguana". The only funny thing about that time. |

I have to disagree with the majority here. by no means is it what it used to be, but it is still pretty good most of the time. I find that it usually relies on the guest. If the guest is good, the show is good. Steve Martin will be on tonight, and I bet it will be a good show. The cast is okay... I like Amy Poehler, Will Forte, Horatio Sans, Seth Myers, and Darryl Hammon who has actually had the longest tenure of any other SNL alum. |

I'm with a lot of people on this thread - SNL has always been spotty - sometimes way spotty for years (yes the early '80's with Mary Gross, but I think that was also with Billy Crystal doing Ricardo Montalban, you couldn't walk two steps without hearing "you look Mah-velous") SNL is still great because you can catch some of the best ensemble improv comedy on a good night. The "Chronic" was one the funniest, smartest, silliest 3 minutes I've seen in ages. Reminded me of the Beastie Boys' "The New Style" -- clever, goofy and really really smart. I watched SNL c. 1979 when it was too late for me to be up, the cast was Belushi, Newman, Murray, Ackroyd, etc. Flame away, but the coneheads were only funny the time they were on Family Feud (Q: Name a typical piece of furniture in a living room - "A loom!") The Norge refrigerator repairman (Ackroyd), Emily Litella - lol, Rosanne Rosannadanna, Bill Murray's sleazy lounge singer... Those bits were great, but we also had to sit through endless "Baseball has been bery bery good...to me" - ugh. SNL is much better with TiVo. |
