Well, she who is never satisfied here. I was sick of the draft on my neck so we moved our bed. The problem (and reason we never moved it to begin with) is that our night tables are 26 inches wide. To center the bed in the space (which is to the right of a gigantic window) we need something much smaller, 13 inches wide to be exact. (Otherwise one night table protrudes under the window and that looks off.) We don't need to put lamps there, we have swing-arm sconces that will hang above, but we need a space to rest a book or a glass of water, and of course additional storage would be ideal. Our bed is a pewter colored iron, and our furniture is a medium-dark cherry in a simple shaker style. I will finally hang my black and white toile curtains. That's about it, my tastes are definitely eclectic. I saw these columns below, considering it but not sure... |

Please stop considering the columns. |

Why? You hate them? They open up for storage. Too pseudo-Greco-Roman? Give me other ideas then! |

What about this? You can make it bigger by stacking a few real books on it: http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?PRODID=74447&CATID=234

They are just very solid looking. Not solid as in sturdy, solid as in chunky. If the space is small a solid box will just fill it right up. Something on legs or with a shelf will be a bit airier. Unless you are going for the jam-packed-squeeze-it-in look, in which cas go for it. ;-) |

Imagine how many Dr. Seuss books I'd have to pile on top to make that work... A floating shelf could work but not a floating book.

I get what you're saying L. You have a point. I think a floating shelf could work, or even a narrow plant stand. I was hoping for a little drawer to toss my watch and keep a pen & paper, that would be ideal.

Do you have to have the storage? Room and Board has some lovely sculptural accent tables (http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/dept.do?dept=RB244). I don't think they are as chunky as the column because they aren't as, well, as column-like. |

I was thinking about something like that but those are all too short. I need something at least 30 inches high, preferably even higher. |

Try overstock.com. I was on their website a couple of weeks ago and saw some side/accent tables in the living room section that might meet your specs. |

What if you did something like a small flat wood item that you could collapse (first part of picture) against the wall when not in use and come out (second part of picture) when needed. |

You could even have it hidden behind a "cabinet" on the wall, so when you opened the cabinet, the shelf would come out. Would look nicer. |
