'Munsters' Actor Al Lewis Dies
By LARRY McSHANE
AP
NEW YORK (Feb. 4) - Actor Al Lewis, the cigar-chomping patriarch of "The Munsters" whose work as a basketball scout, restaurateur and political candidate never eclipsed his role as Grandpa from the television sitcom, died after several years of failing health. He was 95.

Lewis, with his wife at his bedside, passed away Friday night, said Bernard White, program director at WBAI-FM, where the actor hosted a weekly radio program for years. White made the announcement on the air during the Saturday slot where Lewis usually appeared.

"To say that we will miss his generous, cantankerous, engaging spirit is a profound understatement," White said.

Al Lewis used to have a restaurant in the West Village (Bleecker Street I believe) and he'd sit on a stool out front all day. 'The kids. They love the character,' he'd say.

Grandpa AL was also a very left-wing activist and political rabble-rouser for prisoner rights and other worthy causes. I met him once at the Jewish deli on E. Houston, the name of which escapes me, and he was gregarious, funny and friendly. I also enjoyed catching him, when I could, on his WBAI radio show, often with his wife.

NBC recently released The Munsters episodes on the iTunes Music Store, in case anyone wants an episode or two.
Grandpa Munster was great, but Al Lewis was also Patrolman Leo Schnauser from Car 54 Where Are You? in the early '60's.
Thanks, Al!

And, Al Lewis lived for many years, later in life (most definitely his Green Party days) on Roosevelt Island where he'd be seen almost daily, just about anywhere, in cowboy boots and hat! What a thrill it was to run into him and remember...

RIP, Al!
