Not sure what the difference is, but they stole someone's cat. I've had a couple people e-mail me links to the Boston Herald article on it. It gets even more bizzare. I guess I'm obsessed because the thieves are local & I'd lose my mind if someone took my cat. http://www.moggies.co.uk/articles/jan2006/ohio.html http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=125000 |

I am SOOOOO glad he got his cat back. The local couple should be prosecuted, IMHO. |

Why would people kidnap a cat? That is sociopathic behavior! |

Wouldn't that be called catnapping?

Yes, though it could have some confusion with catnapping -- i.e., taking a snooze in the middle of the day. |

I was trying to make a joke re. this crazy situation...(like a cat burglar who sneaks into a house like a cat)... This is making me remember the local situation where someone took someone's dog (was discussed on MOL) - the dog eventually made it home & I think there was some thought that the person had taken someone else's dog before... |

I think they should have named the lowlifes who did this! This ranks right up there with the shanks that refused to return the dog to the hurricane survivors. |

doul Yep, I remember the dog story and how a lot of us helped look for it. It was a bout a year later the owners found him. I think the dog's name was Rosco? Even though Ohio's owner had to agree not to press charges to get his cat back, I hope he does. If for nothing more then to out these creeps. If I lived in West Orange I would want to know if these creeps live near me. We don't let Miracle out of the house, but ever once in a while she escapes. As much as I complain she doesn't like me I would be very upset if someone stole her. |

I can't understand how in the world someone in Massachusetts wouldn't know where Ohio is. What kind of education do they provide in Massachusetts? |

Even if they don't press charges, a few well placed flyers and an ad in the paper can work wonders. |

Yes, but the question "where is Ohio" is now trickier than it used to be. I want to see if I can get one of the "Free Ohio" t-shirts mentioned in the articles. I read something else online last night about how people who think that they know who the thieves are have been writing the initials on "Lost Kitty" posters around Ptown. I wonder if the Star-Ledger will pick it up as one of those "weird criminal" pieces? |

I am curious - what happens to people who steal a pet? I think in general how serious a theft is considered depends on the value of that which is stolen. A domestic pet, unless purebred, would be considered of very low value to the law - or would it? It's not the same as kidnapping a human, but to pet lovers, it is really about as serious. I wonder what the law says. |

CLK, my weak understanding of our legal system is that it emphasizes precedent over statutes. So it doesn't matter what's written. If a case points out that stealing a pet is serious because of the emotional distress it causes, then it can establish that it's worse than stealing an inanimate object of $X in value.

A guy I knew in the Navy would subsidies his income by pet napping and then returning the animals for a reward, or selling them to a pet store. From what I understand it got to the point that some stores would ask for a particular pet, and give him the address of the owner. The guy was making a fortune. He would even take trips to other towns, stay over night, then return in a week to look for wanted posters. He eventually got caught, and was charged with Animal Cruelty, in Florida that is a Felony (NJ is a Misdemeanor). I’m not sure what the penalty was, because he first had to serve out the sentence that the Navy gave him, before dealing with the state. I do know he ended up with a Bad Conduct Discharge.

That's very comforting to know - I had the impression it was a slap-on-the-wrist kind of offense. Wow, that guy in the Navy was a real case. |

He sure was. He got caught because he had rented a room in a seedy motel, and had 4 dogs in there (he had been kicked out of his apartment). He had to leave on deployment, so he left the dogs and then called the Hotel, saying someone needed to go in there and take them to the pound. The Hotel was in Jacksonville, and a chip showed that one of the dogs was from St. Augustine. The pound called the owner, and when the owner showed up, she recognized one (or more) of the other dogs from Reward Posters. The guy gets back from deployment and goes to St Augustine, he sees one of the old posters and what the reward was, I’m guessing it was a lot, because he steals the dog again. Then when he contacts the owner, the Police were there to pick him up.
