The snow will be going on into the afternoon tomorrow, but as a general question I wonder how early in the morning it is reasonable to run a snow blower, and whether the hours change on Saturday and Sunday.

I suggest 7AM weekdays, 8AM weekends. I think the Maplewood noise ordinance suggests that on Sunday it would actually be 10AM, so let 'em go call a cop on me.

If you do their driveway too, they won't have a thing to complain about!

If the question is etiquete and not law, it's very neighborhood specific. When I grew up, there was a general rule against running noisy machines on Sunday. If everyone else is up and outside shovelling and snowblowing, it's clearly okay.

I wouldn't want to be the only one running a noisy machine while everyone else is trying to sleep. (Nor would I want to hear a noisy machine while I was trying to sleep.)

Of course if my sidewalk/driveway got cleared, I wouldn't be complaining.

J.B.

A lot of us have to do our snow cleaning before 7:00am if we are going to be to work on time and avoid being blasted by the amateur MOL sidewalk inspectors.

This sets up an interesting problem, no? :-)

With a big snow, its not unusal to have to blow 2x.I go out after I first get up for the 1st round, and then wait for the snow to stop to do a fine tuning.Considering that my neighbors wait forever to do theirs,I can't base my routine on anything other than what works for me.If they showed the least little interest in their own property,I might consider doing their walk, but if they don't care, why should I?

On a work/school day, I don't think that earlier than 7:00 AM is really a big problem. I might not enjoy being waked up at 6:00 AM, but I would understand. Saturday or Sunday is another issue. I really think that 9:00 am is early enough on a weekend for most folks.

Re clearing neighbors' walks/driveways, I can't imagine a situation when this would not be welcomed, especially as a "peace offering" for early noise. With a snowblower the effort to clear an extra sidewalk or two is fairly negligible and can buy lots of goodwill.

There is also some appropriate etiquette for the recipients, however. A big thank you is a good start and an offer to buy fuel is certainly appropriate.

Dog-
I wouldn't start with the snowblower until 9 or 10 this time around. Though I'm sure our one obnoxious neighbor will be out there sometime between 6 and 7am.

Buzz-
It isn't supposed to stop until 3 or so...
Happy shovling

If you need to get your car out of the garage (at any hour) then all bets are off, and it's tough noogies on your neighbors.

When we lived up there, we've heard people shoveling and blowing snow at midnight, and it was perfectly understandable.

LOL, the talking heads are saying the snow is falling in NYC at up to three inches an hour. We could end up with twenty inches or so before this is over.

I am heading out now to do the first shoveling. If you don't hear from me in an hour, send over the St. Bernard with the brandy cask. OK?

Bob-
Your close. It's now predicted we'll get 16-24 inches. My brother in law who is in Chatham right now says there is at least 18 inches there. Be prepared for Corzine to declare a State of Emergency. He said he would do this if we got more then 12 inches.

Made it back, without the St. Bernard, but I coulda used the brandy.

Easily 14 inches and thigh high where it has blown or the snowplows threw it up on the sidewalk.

Still have the driveway to do, but that will wait until after I warm up.

Maplewoody, you pups sure blend in with the snow. Make sure they don't jump into a snow bank. If they do, you may not find them until the thaw. :-)

Maplewoody,
