anyone? would tomorrow's train commute be normal? is the snow still a realisitic excuse to stay home?

The snow excuse never pans out for me, since one of my workaholic, Blackberry-gripping bosses lives in Summit and never seems to have a problem taking the train I claim is canceled. So unfair. |

by tomorrow all the roads will be fine. The crews will have all night to salt and scrape and all will be well tomorrow. Sorry. Unless you threw your back out shovelling???? |

I'm actually OK with it if at least 1/3 of the others don't make it in due to airy-fairy excuses (my wealthy colleague from Valhalla comes to mind, and my boss from out near Morristown). Where I work its sorta the case that the wealthier they are, the further out they live and the more prolific and prolix their excuses. Meanwhile, I will feel SMUG and secretly do tax-related things, and use the copier endlessly for personal reasons as they sputter into scheduled conference call meetings doing their "I'm really-contruly working at home, oh yes I am, and I will shoot endless e-mails at you to prove it!" I get a kick outta the gyrations they go through to validate it. Whereas I can screw off with gay abandon as I made it in. |

I once fought my way into the city to my office on 6th...like 4 other people in the whole company came in...we walked up the middle of 6th Ave. as people went by on skis, took a very early long lunch & got sent home with a free vacation day to use whenever for making it in...that was nice & a great memory to see the city like that - so quiet. |

NOT ME! I retired last Friday after 35 years of delivering mail in the hills of West Orange. I'll sit in the window and watch some poor schlub do my driveway and walk. |

They closed schools! ARGH. Was it really necessary? On the other hand, they certainly could have done a better job plowing the roads. Maybe I should hop over to Soapbox. |

I'm off - would've had to take the day to take care of my kid anyway, but we closed because they had a hard time clearing the parking lots at work (apparently there was a lot of blowing snow, and as soon as they got an area clean it got covered again). But despite all of that, I have a big report I'm working on and will probably spend most of the day working anyway. |

I tried to drive to work but turned around at Springfield Ave. The roads are a mess and I got a bad feeling about it. Everyone else in my office made it in because they didn't get as much snow up north where my office is. Oh well! |

My is sore from being in the chair with the laptop non-stop all day. I swear, I work harder when I'm home. BTW - typical work day: boss sent me on several goose chases. Example: We talked on the phone at 2:30, I told her about something I was trying to track down and about half an hour ago, she sends me an e-mail asking me to get a hold of a journal article. Of course, it was the same thing I'd told her about 3 hours ago. I also tell her that I'm trying to contact someon for whom I only have a last name, so it's taking me awile. She e-mails back "Oh, I know her" and attached her contact info.
And we wonder why I hate my job? |

We stayed home yesterday waiting for the phone company repair person -- we've been completely without phone service since Wednesday! When nobody showed by 5PM, I hiked down to the train station and used the pay phone to try and raise a supervisor. The supervisor told me that they had called off all the repair crews because nobody had expected two feet of snow. Since we didn't have a working phone, the telephone company couldn't call us to tell us they weren't coming. To make things worse, the supervisor then told me that it would be several more days before they could get anyone out to fix our phone line because they were fully booked for the next several days. I finally played the health card telling him about my husband's serious heart condition (true) and our advanced ages (both my husband and I are long standing AARP members). The supervisor said that since it was a medical emergency they could get someone out to us today -- which they did. My husband was home when the line-repair person informed him that a telephone repair person had cut our line -- and two others which as far as he knew had not been reported. The repair person actually apologized for Verizon's poor service and took about 10 seconds to fix the problem. So, if you live in/near Maplecrest and haven't had phone service for a week, this may be the reason. On the whole, I would much rather have had a working telephone/internet connection and no reason to stay home yesterday. |
