Last Friday I went to see the hysterically funny Best of Show movie at the Jersey City Loews. The best scenes were those in which Fred Willard did the play by play with commentary that was off the charts funny.

And it got me thinking about the Fernwood Tonight days and Mary Hartman. Does anyone else out there remember these series? Lorreta and Charlie? Mary? Garth and Barth? Happy Kyne and the Mirth Makers?

And in the category of absolutely useless knowledge taking up space in my brain, does anyone remember the Lorenzo and Henrietta Music Show? I thought that that summer replacement - which lasted for like a day - was also a hoot.

Lorenzo Music played the voice of Carlton the Doorman on Rhoda.

I have to confess that I immediately thought of "Best in Show" this morning, when the announcers were carrying on about the winner of the Westminster Dog Show - Rufus, and his "egg shaped head".

Fred Willard really made "Best in Show". A friend of mine who is a sports filmmaker said he covered a dog show once and he thought "Best in Show" accurately depicted the comical freak show they are behind the scenes.

S, Martin Mull was under-rated. Happy Kyne and the Mirth Makers would be tough to beat at Battle of the Basement Bands.

Fred Willard absolutely stole "A Mighty Wind" (speaking of "Best in Show"). Hilarious.

Mary Hartman always had a problem with Waxy Yellow Buildup on her kitchen floors. Here's some MH trivia. Graham Jarvis who played Charlie (or Baby Boy as Loretta used to call him)also played the guy with the umbrella who robbed Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis in the original Out Of Towners movie.

Lorenzo Music was also the voice of Garfield the Cat for a while.
Back when I lived in Boston I did a production of The Lady From Maxim's with Greg Mulavey and he told lots of fun Mary Hartman stories. Really nice guy, who I remembered more from his MASH guest spot than from Mary Hartman. Though at the time I was still pretty "young". I did get to meet Burgess Meredith as a result of that show though, and that was one of the real highlights of the run.

MH MH was a must see for me in High School. I was astounded by the witty, urbane, and sophisticated humor, like when MH shared her fantasy of sleeping with Telly Savalas in rubber sheets with vaseline smeared all over his bald head.

I started watching it because this woman I had a crush on was into it, and I would go over to her house to watch with her. Nothing much came from that relationship, but I kept watching MH.

MH MH was on too late for me, so I caught it sporadically. But, I do remember Lorenzo Music as Carlton the Doorman on "Rhoda".

Which I probably shouldn't admit.

My French teacher in high school used to call me Mary Hartman - though I don't think I ever saw the show. Even when I was a teenager, I never stayed up late and never had much interest in TV anyway.

I got this nickname because I always had some crisis or other going on. I was 15, what can I say.

"Baby Boy (Big Ole Baby Boy)"
Words and Music by MARY KAY PLACE

Well, I never will forget
The first time that we met,
Dancin’ squares and a do-si-do-in’ at the V.F. Hall.
He was old as my pappy,
But that didn’t make me unhappy.
He was cute as the dickens,
Just a doll.

Had no hair on your head,
But a lot above your lip;
You was all dressed up in cowboy corduroy.
Felt my soul start a thrashin’
And my heart-strings a lashin’
I knew I had found my Baby Boy.

Chorus:
Baby Boy, Baby Boy
Sweet Charlie, you’re my
Big ole Baby Boy.
Well, you’re my life
And you’re my joy;
You’re my precious bedtime toy.
Sweet Charlie, you’re my
Big ole Baby Boy.

Later on that night
You asked me would it be all right
If you took me for a bit
To the Tas-tee Freeze.
Well, we shared some chunky tuna;
Then we kissed under the moon-a,
And I knew forever
We’d be thick as fleas.

And then quicker than a wink,
I said, “Now, Baby Boy, I think
It’s time we tied the knot,
Said nupital vows.”
My folks cried, “Cradle robber!”
I said, “Please, he’s my heart-throbber.
The Lord wants us together
Here and now.”

Chorus

Ev’ry single day
I count my blessings and I say,
“Thank you, Lord for sending me
My Baby Boy.
Life with him’s a pleasure
And there’s no way I can measure
All the love I feel inside for Baby Boy.

And I just found out today
That our baby’s on the way,
An expression of our love
And of our joy.
Well, a girl would be delightin’
And, oh, it sure would be excitin’
To have my Baby Boy’s baby boy.

Was Charlie the character who drowned in his own bowl of chicken noodle soup? Or was that Mary's dad?

Do you think MOL is like "Mary Hartman! Mary Hartman!"?

i remember an interview with Louise Lasser. Someone asked her Why haven't you done anything else? what are you going to do next?
She said, "I did Mary Hartman,Mary Hartman. I don't have to do anything else."
I thought that was a good answer.
i used to stay up late to watch it and loved it. I was in high school.

I agree about both Mary Hartman Mary Hartman and Best in Show. I might even say that Best in Show is Christopher Guest's best movie so far.

What I used to love the most was when Martin Mull would bring on some schlub from Fernwood who would tell a story that was a complete dud.

Mull would look at him, smile and say "well that was certainly almost interesting."

Priceless.

Besides $20,000 Pyramid, my other claim to fame is that I met and had dinner with Louise Lasser soon after Mary Hartman went off the air. Do you know that she was once married to Woody Allen? I loved Mary Hartman.

As far as Best in Show. A friend and I saw it and decided to take our then 8 year old sons with us. They sat in the row in front of us. During one of the scenes where the two men were kissing each other, my friend's son turned around to us and said: "Grandma said I should see this movie?" Personally I think it's a toss up between Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman as to which is funnier.

I was a freshman in college and went dressed as Mary Hartman on Halloween.....boyfriend was Tom in his high-school jacket with a bottle hanging out of the pocket. Braided my hair, minidress, the whole thing. I can't remember much about the show except my college crowd loved it and we'd watch it together in the dorm. I suspect we were under the influence most of the time. Made it even funnier.

Loved that chicken soup episode!

Come to think of it, Fernwood Tonight was the first of a long line of good talk show spoofs, which reached heights with the Larry Sanders Show. I really loved that show. I wish it would come back.

In between, Martin Short had a talk show spoof that was funny, too, but in a much campier way. Jimny Cricket was his name, I think.

Then there was the great movie "King of Comedy," in which Jerry Lewis was brilliant as a jaded Johnny Carson-type talk show host who gets kidnapped by Sandra whatshername and Robert DeNiro. I mean it. Check out this Jerry Lewis performance. He's brilliant.

After the kidnapping, DeNiro, a desperate, no-talent wannabe, then takes Jerry's place on the show and achieves celebrity. There is no such thing as bad publicity.

It's a Scorsese movie, but there's something Altman-like about it.
