With help from local citizens and business owners the Maplewood Firemans Benevolent Association Local #25 raised $2135 for the Aluminum Cans For Burned Children fund at St Barnabas Hospital of Livingston. The money was raised with the help of caring people that dropped off aluminum beverage cans at both firehouses during 2006. The money benefits families and children that are burned each year. It also supports education of school aged children on prevention of burns. Out of several departments participating in this program Maplewood posted as the No.#2 department under Bayonne. Thanks to all who helped. Please continue your support for 2007. |

That's great Bill! Thanks for letting us know. If more people in town knew the fire dept collect cans for the Burned Children Fund I bet even more money could be raised! Thanks to the dedicated firefighters for doing this.

I give all my cans to the fire dept. instead of the town pick up. With Aluminum hitting 20 year highs, 2007 should be a good year. Bill, why not set up a container at the recycling center in addition to the one at the fire house? Chances are more people would put cans into your container versus the big container, knowing its going toward some good. If the town won't allow this (because you'll tap into the money they get from the cans) then see if you can put up a sign at the aluminum container there, informing people of what you're doing and to also bring cans to the fire house. |

Can the cans be crushed or do they need to be in their original shape? I ask because my daughter is convinced they won't be recyclable if they're crushed. |

I crush them all. I've also brought over old gutters and downspouts that I flattened. I'm sure they would take aluminum ingots if you had them. |

Preferably crushed in order to save space in the can cage. But beverage cans in any condition are appreciated. Please no tin cans and no cat or Tuna cans. Thank you. Money is taken off when other non recyable debris is mixed in. |
