now that you have been exposed to maplewood online, would you ever be able to leave it behind?

say you moved away, could you really say that you wouldn't log into MOL and see how things back in Maplewood are going?

my wife and i discussed this last night, and we both admitted that we would still check in....and SPY on all of you!

I moved in June of '05. I was never a very frequent poster--still not--but I get my MOL fix, even now at least 3-4 times a day. And though I love where I live now (PA), I still feel connected to MA/SO because of MOL. I wish we had something like it here.

I expected to have "stopped" by now...but I just can't. I've realized I don't have to live there to be part of the MOL community.

Why would anyone move away and still frequent MOL?

Why not? People email, call and write from all over just to stay in touch. 'Visiting' MOL is no different. I think a significant chunk of posters are out of state retirees, college students and the like.

Friends are friends whether they're next door or an ocean or two away...

Do we ever really leave any part of our prior experiences behind when we go on to something new?

Scully - I was kidding! I moved to Florida 2 1/2 years ago, and have probably posted 1000 times since.

Cheers

Cool! How do you like it down there? I was in Florida once for nine hours! Saw my first palm tree.

I love it and I hate it. It's a much more casual and less intense lifestyle. People are generally friendly and usually polite, but you definitely have to make a concerted effort to meet *interesting* or worldly people. I miss Maplewood terribly.

Other than a few weeks of hurricane hell, the weather is almost always good - we're all in shorts now.

And there are Palm trees everywhere.

Next time you should stay a little longer.

My sister use to think the same way as Debby and CFA; until her house was destroyed by the last major hurricane. She'd like to move back up here but can't afford it. Plus she has three kids. In Florida there is some kind of program you pay into for college so you don't go broke. Not sure how it works, but she has all three kids in it.

There are a number of very good college funding programs. There are pre-paid college programs that let you fund at today's prices for tomorrrow's tuition, R&B, fees. This may be what she has. Ferinstance my neighbor funded his 3 year old's 4 years of tuition at any state institution for about $21K.

There's also something called the "Bright Futures" Scholarship, funded by the lottery system. I believe any student with a 3.5 GPA and 1250 SATs gets full tuition scholarship at any state school. There's a lower GPA requirement that qualifies for a 50% scholarship.

Oh. And I laid out by the pool today

The tuition for State schools is 3,400.00 per year. My daughter is coming down to start in the summer. My daughter doesn't qualify for the Bright Futures scholarship (although she has the qualifications) but she isn't graduating from a Florida high school . I got her residence rates because I'm a resident.

Debby, Yeah it is. She'll be going to FAU. She starts on June 29th. She'll be close but still far enough to have her freedom. I'm in Boca everyday so I can see her whenever.

I'll have to ask my sister what the program is. My nephew ticked her off by not going to college. He was supposed to graduate with the class of 2005; but somehow had enough credits to graduate early - Dec 2004. He decided to go into law enforcement, like his dad.

Her middle child, a Junior, on the other hand wants to be a Marine Biologist. We aren't sure how she decided this. One of her cousins graduated with the same degree a couple of years ago; but my Florida niece claims not to have known this.

The youngest just turned three.

It's too bad NJ doesn't have a program like this.

One of my other sisters bought a townhouse near the university her oldest attends. The goal is after a year my niece could attend the school as a state resident. A lot of people seem to do this. My uncle bought a couple and rented them to students, like other people do. Yet, his daughters didn't live in any of them.
