I love bulk pickup day. This year, I got to watch people pick up the following from my curb to live a second life: a dresser an old frying pan with flaking Teflon (?) a carpet stainless steel sink with faucet (they even pulled it out of the countertop) a chandelier Effortless freecycle! Better than the toothfairy! I love it! Anyone else have junk reincarnation to share? |

Somebody ripped the top half off the base from an old gas BBQ grill that we put out. It was left by the previous owners when we moved in and was in such bad shape that I couldn't imagine what they wanted it for. |

A chiminea that needs to be scraped and painted. A 20" tv (it didn't have any green color anymore; everything showed up red). Four cushioned folding lawn chairs. A John Deere gas trimmer/edget/blower set. Window screens to our old kitchen door. Decorative wall brackets. The irony is that I'd posted some of these items "free to a good home" here last year and no one wanted them. |

Last time around, someone made off with an old guitar case. This year, I hope to unload a broken printer. |

Did you ever hear the one about the person who put stuff out with a sign that said, "Free," and no one took it. The sign was changed to say, "$25, inquire within," and it was immediately stolen. J.B. |

I miss bulk pick-up days. We'd put things out and by morning, nearly all of it would be in a new home. But, South Orange deemed them too costly, so now we have the opportunity to sit in a long line and attempt to just toss our stuff into a dumpster a few times a year. Environmentally short-sighted - no freecycle here. |

Wouldn't it be funny to see some of the items you got rid of at curbside pickup on Ebay?

I've been tempted to pick up some marginally useful things from the curb and list them on ebay, but I decided against it. Last week, we beckoned to a woman who was searching on our block. We told her we had just put out an L-shaped table. She said her husband could use it. It was disassembled, so she wouldn't have noticed it if we hadn't shown her. We helped her put it in her car. She said she lives in Maplewood. Of course, she thanked us very nicely.

For many years we were net gainers on bulk nights--no matter how much I put out, somehow we managed to scavange even more from our neighbors. Got some really solid oak side tables one year--stripped and refinished, they were perfect for the play room. |
