I have to admit that I love the spring. The air is nice and fresh, with different flowers producing pleasant scents. And then there is one that drives me up a wall. I'm not going to say what I think it smells like but hopefully someone else knows what I'm talking about without me having to say it. If someone else wants to comment I'll chime in. What is making this STINK??!!! |

It could be the hyacinths...they drive Mr. BGS crazy too and I must have them on the dining room table for Easter decorations...they go right outside after the last guest leaves... |

My guess is compost. Although, I am highly allergic to hyacinths and they drive me batty, too. |

Both compost/fertilizer/mulch all smell well you don't want to say it, but...like poop. The Hyacinths that are in the house sort of have a fermented fruit or rotten /off smell to me and go figure some other people on MOL. TS loves the smell though. |

I find that the rotting leaves that were matted down from the snow are now "mulching" and sometimes it smells like tobacco and sometimes like gasoline. But the AIR smells so good! |

I don't know if its a hyacinth. Do they grow out in the wild? I've come across the smell just walking to the train station. Suddendly its like you're overcome by a wall of this really NASTY STANK! I know its not mulch. Mulch can smell like Sh*t, and what I think this stuff smells like doesn't come out of that side to narrow it down. Do I dare say what I think it smells like? I don't think anyone has picked up on it yet. |

Stinky plant might also be jonquils, which hould be pushing up in your area by now. I think it's too early for apple blossom, and suspect you don't have too many apple trees there. Or possibly lily of the valley - massed plantings reek where one or two might smell sweet and intriguing. There's a famous book about the life of an Italian famous 'nose' who's a rogue in the perfume industry...LL, what's the man's name?? I'm sure I e-mailed you about 3 years ago when I read his book! Anyway, he claims athat all the best perfumes have a note of sewers or 'unwashed bottoms', because that sharpens the nice aromatic notes. |

Hmmm, How to say this. Bad kitty? I never had a cat so can't confirm that. Well, marked territory huh? You're in the right ballpark if your not marking with pee and its not number two. Now does anyone know what I'm talking about that stinks? I can't say it in a way that's not offensive or some sexual slang. |

Darren, Another word for "kitty" 3 hints: 1. Same # of letters, vowels and non-vowels as "kitty" 2. Does not begin with a vowel. 3. Sexual slang. |

Perfume is a novel (from memory; didn't think Susskind was the author fo the book I have in minda ltho I've read Perfume too), this is a biography. The man in question teaches in the UK (or did at the time of writing the book) and claims to have worked out a different way of classifying scents. He's put down by the big 'noses' of industry because he's an outsider, and claims the biology of scent works differently to the way it's usually taught. He's quite young, in his 30s I think and is definitely still alive. Got into industrial scents via physics? chemistry? Oh, what IS his name??? Great book, interesting theory ... apparently he can distinguish more kinds of smell than anyone else on earth... |

Nope Jersey boy, not the female but the male. Ok, the Stank that I'm speaking of, not knowing from what plant or tree it comes from has been described as coming from a "Jizzweed" or a "Cumtree" by some of my friends growing up. Sorry, I'm really not trying to offend anyone and I would really like to know what is creating this retching stink.

Oohhh, that's "steamed broccoli and onions." (Try it in the microwave.) It smells like either semen or scrotal sweat. I told Mrs. J.B. about the "bad kitty" smell and she said she's smelled it today. However, I smelled "steamed broccoli and onions" today too. Hey, IT"S SPRING!!! What do you expect. J.B. |

I am intoxicated by the smell of lilacs! I wish I could have one (or ten!) here at home. Please forgive me if you glance out your window and see an old lady with her nose buried in your lilac blossoms! It's only me enjoying that rare and short-lived seasonal aromatic treat. |

Berke Breathed was the cartooninst for the daily school newspaper at UT Austin when I was there. This time of year all of his cartoons were sex related! The running lines always would make fun of the seeming lack of mental capabilities of males in the springtime...They were hilarious. I will if I can find one to post, something like "Gee it's springtime and all the trees smell like scrot*m sweat!" (I got red dots for the "s" word!) |

You people are all CRAZY ! All I know is that what ever 'smell' is in the air, I'm having a hellish allergy week. This guy gets into an elevator with an attractive business woman. They both push their respective floors, when the woman turns to the man and asks: "Excuse me, can I smell your BALLS?" Guy says, "You most certainly may not!!" To which the woman replies, "Oh, then it must be your feet" Thanks for playing, have a nice day |

Well I was walking back from the post offfice today (one person on duty) and BAM, I get hit with the stinky smell right by the train station. So I did some sniffing around (forgive the pun) to see if I can find out where its coming from. I think the stink is coming from a bush which is right next to the sidewalk if you're heading down Dunnell on the left towards the police station. The bush that I believe is causing the odor is immediately to your left if you leave the small parking lot. I may be wrong. The bush has tiny yellow flowers which look like bells in tiny clusters. The leaves of the bush had sharp needles all around the edges. Anyone know what this is? |

Darren, I attempted to investigate said smell on my walk back from the station to my car last night. I kept sniffing and didn't smell anything. I also couldn't remember where you said the flowers were, so I just sniffed and sniffed for a good 2-3 minutes while walking. I'm quite certain I looked like an idiot and I still don't know which plant you're referring too. Now that I've re-read your post, I think I know where it is. I'll check again. |
