I read about this the other day. Has anyone seen it? http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/bubble/sfeature/sf_video.html PBS made a documentary about the actual boy in Texas who, until his death at age 12 essentially lived his entire life in a plastic bubble. I find this whole thing to be absolutely heartbreaking...I don't know if I even want to watch it. I watched the footage of David's life they have on the web site and it just looks so sad. Maybe it's because he would be close to my age. Maybe it's because I can only think about what it must have been like for his parents to not be able to touch--really touch--their chil through his entire life. I don't know if I'll be able to watch it. It's funny the things that get to you. |

I remember seeing a television progrma many years ago (Wide World of Disney perhaps?) which told the story of the boy in the bubble. I was just a child then myself and found it hard to believe that the world could be so dangerous for someone that he would have to live his entire life cut off from any form of human contact. With today's medical achievements in fighting against auto immune deficiency diseases, I wonder if a bubble would be entirely necessary were a child to be born with that abnormality today. |

I know, Moops is funny and all, but it stopped being funny when I saw the video and saw this kid's face. It effected me more than I expected it would. (btw, not to sound holier than thou and certainly not to make anyone feel bad--Moops was funny!) But the picture of this kid stopped me in my tracks.

TomD, I saw this on PBS a few nights, in bits and pieces since I'm unable to catch it from the beginning. It's fascinating and extremely heart breaking. I kept picking it up from where one doctor told the family to allow David out of the bubble and his regular doctors were up in arms stating that this advice was criminal and David would surely die a quicker death. As a mom, not being able to touch my children would be utterly unbearable. |
