I need to find a good daycare center for my newborn daughter about 3 months down the road. The South Mountain Y has a waiting list and is not letting in any new children until September. My wife and I visited Karate for Kids and were not impressed. We got a better feeling about Kelly's Kids, which happens to be ideally located for us, but we'd like to hear from anyone who has firsthand experience with them before making a final decision. There is a place close to Pathmark (I believe its name is Discovery) that we plan to visit soon as well. If anyone has anything they wish to share about it, we'd appreciate all opinions. If anyone can recommend any other daycare center in the Maplewood/South Orange area, we'd be grateful to hear what you have to say. Thanks.

Someone posted a pretty long list of places within the past few months, so try a search if you haven't already.

I believe Discovery near Pathmark is now operating under a different name, but i don't recall what it is.

We've used Garden of Wonders in Union since my son was about 3 1/2 months old, and we've been very happy with it. (He'll be 2 in June.) It's most convenient if you live in the area closer to Springfield Ave, vs. Wyoming. Last i heard, they did have a waiting list, but i didn't get the sense that the wait would be as long as the Y. Their number is (908) 206-1777.

There is also Tutor Time in Livingston I have heard great things about. I think Wendyn has a big list. Don't give up on the Y; sometimes openings happen at the last moment

Thanks, PapayaGirl & Red. I tried doing a search on MOL prior to posting my message, but can't seem to find anything more recent than 2002-2003 (which explains why I only knew the old name of place near Pathmark). If anyone can locate the previously posted list and could cut & paste the link to it in this string, I'd be much obliged.

Here is the list. I've just included full time daycare centers that take infants. It is compiled from personal experience and recommendations from MOL and friends. I don't have any personal info on home daycares but you might want to ask around about those as well.

Good luck!

FYI...haven't heard great things about Kelly's Kids on the board which is why it is not on the list. But I have no personal experience and I haven't heard any first hand stories about it, just rumors from the board from several years ago.

Ditto about what Wendyn said with Kelly's kids. All second-hand stories, but none that were good.

I had my son in Kelly's Kids (though it was about 6 years ago) and we weren't very happy with it. We moved my son as soon as he was old enough to go into another school.

Some other parents whose children were in the school with him had similar dissatisfaction.

I will say that I found no real "dangerous" problems, but if you need details, you can PL me.

My kids are now at the South Mountain Y and we like it, but we couldn't get either one in at first and they both started at Discovery as infants and moved to the Y a few months later. Discovery was okay, but the Y has more programs and equipment. If you're interested in the Y, I would suggest you get on their waiting list and you can always tell them you've made other arrangements if you're happy elsewhere.

Friends of mine have moved their children from the Y to St. Stephen's in Millburn and they like it, except they follow a school-type calendar which means they are closed for a week in April and two weeks in August, unlike the Y which is open almost every day of the year.

Our daughter - 18 mos. - has been at KinderCare since I returned to work last September. We are very happy with the center, and have had especially good experiences with the staff caring for her.
