{April 26 - Hug an Australian Day! Thought you might be interested to know of this vital annual ceremonial date - all hugs accepted either electronically or in person (if you're coming to Howlong, NSW. From the website www.aussieinamerica.com: April 26 is "Hug An Australian Day" in the U.S. When I first heard this, I too thought someone was pulling my leg. (There's another concept for a crazy day.) A bit of a web surf turns up the possibility that this obscure tradition is one of sixty "wacky", "copyrighted holidays" created by Wellcat Holidays. "Hug An Australian Day" is earmarked for Americans to show how much they appreciate the care and support they have enjoyed from their Australian friends over the years. I guess there are a few American servicemen who could testify to that one! That they chose April 26 suggests an inspired combination of Australia Day and ANZAC Day - two of the big national holidays in Australia. Australia Day is celebrated on January 26, and ANZAC Day is celebrated on April 25 (when it is still April 24 in the U.S.). The ANZACS were the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey early on the morning of 25 April 1915 during the First World War (1914-1918). The day has evolved to become one of remembrance of the men and women who have fought and died in all wars. Shortly after the veterans march in Oz, Aussies in the U.S. will find themselves being accosted by those warm 'n wacky Americans. Sadly, no American has yet tried it out on me. Oh well, I shall just have to console myself with thought that perhaps they didn't want to infringe the copyrighted nature of the celebration. Or perhaps they misheard and thought it was "Mug an Austrian Day". Yikes! All those Germanic tourists being intercepted mid-yodel! Ruth Roy of Wellcat emailed me with the reasons for their copyrighting the Days: The reason we chose to copyright/trademark our holidays is that ever since they were created some years ago (and we've added to the list over the years), we've been frustrated by so many folks simply using them for commercial ventures and never even giving us credit for them. She goes on to describe the geneses of "Hug an Australian Day", which goes back to the days when her husband Tom Roy was a radio talk show host: Coming up with original and personable events enlivened the connection with listeners, hence the incredible fun we had when an Aussie TV network chose to send a crew to spend the day with us, part of which was on-air and included some delightful phone calls between Aussies and our own listeners here in Pennsylvania. We made some pleasant friendships and still keep in contact with folks in your native country during the past 13 or so years since that occasion.

Debby, this is a lovely Shabbat gift - unexpected and a great way to start the day. (we're ahead of you on the time charts, but about 12 or 14 hours, I think. It's 7.40 am as I type) Thank you! Of course, it also means you could hug the rabbi...! Soon after Dave announced Who's Online, he released a breakdown of membership figures and there something like 70+ people in Australia - I hope the rest of us feel hugged, too! |

*blush* that time difference seems to be that we are ahead about 10 hours, now that our daylight savings time (that's 'summertime') has ended. |

I'd be in the mood for real-life catching up today, too, if not so ikky (see Reading Room). So even tho Hug an Aussie Day has passed, belated good wishes are even more welcome! (And I hope I speak for all Aussies on MOL). Have realised that posting on MOL is even more addictive than reading MOL, and fear my sanity will be lost through being lead astray... ...and we have so many MUCH better beers, ales, lagers, all brewed drinks than FOSTERS!!! You gotta find an Aussie near you for a sample pack of some of the good ones (we even have a chilli beer, brewed from red peppers, I believe!)

We're always looking for something tastier than the the commercial swill they force upon us! |

maybe melbourne mate barry can bring some next time he comes over to see LibraryLady...I don't own a passport (sad but true). See if Bootleg from Margaret River export to the USA - apparently it's worth your coming over to Western Australia for if they don't! Another good one is the Queensland Eumundi beer, however neither of these are on the top of the list (from memory) |

Joanne - I showed your posts to Mendy, and he knew your family and everyone/place you mentioned. He is Chaim's grandson, and just had his third child, a daughter, on Monday. As much as I love him, I don't think he'd appreciate a hug! |

Such happy news - pls wish them all the best from us! (He's probably horrified that I e-mail on Shabbat, but I won't on Yom Tov...) I used to enjoy Chaim's sermons and the tutorials I attended. If Mendy is anything like him, no wonder you love learning with him! But mainly we were Shulim's congregants. I so miss those services, he had a really special way (too old fashioned for today's tastes) of making the Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur services meaningful and that style really appealed to the academic in me. RE: MOL vacation downunder: a tad far for Barry to fly, Nancy!! but once you folks hit Australia he'd have an excellent excuse to air-safari you all through the best beer and wine regions to here! |
