No sure where to post this so...

If you have blinds on your windows and you have a cat please take this warning to heart!!! Luckily my cat is okay. I went upstars last night to put the boys to bed I heard the 'flapping' sound the cat makes on the blinds when she wants us to open them so she can look out the window. I went into my sister's room to open the blinds to find her hanging from the cord for blinds!

I yelled for someone to get scissors as I lifted the cat so she wouldn't continue to choke while trying to get the blind strings untangled from her neck. Luckily she's okay. We don't know how long she was hanging there but the string was tight enough she could 'Meow' for help.

We now have the cords bunched with a rubberband at the top of the blinds so the cat can't reach the string again. I'm also considering getting shades to replace the blinds.

wow, JGA. Our cats are contantly batting the cords and chewing on them, never thought they might hang themselves with them!

thanks for the warning!

Instead of tying the cords up with a rubber band (tho that will work) you can cut the cord where it loops and tie a knot in each one. A little less convenient , but a good way to prevent pets (and children) from hanging themselves.

Now they make the pulls separate, but mine
still end up knotting.

Anyone want a wonderful male cat? Great
personality, almost all white. Person moved
and couldn't keep him and dumped him off.
He made it through the winter. He just wants
to be with people. Meow.

If you have pets or children you should buy cordless blinds or use cord cleats to tie the cords away from them. If anyone needs cleats please send me a message and I will mail them to you for FREE. They are clear plastic.

That's a crazy story. Your cat's so lucky you found her in time!

I remember once one of my cats got a department store shopping bag handle stuck arund her neck. SHe probably wasn't in danger, but she was terrified because of the racket it made as she dashed from room to room, around the house and up and down the stairs. Very hard to catch her! It was really very funny, though I'm sure she was traumatized. They are like babies, getting into stuff a lot.

I'll go check my chords.

Pippi-
We never thought she'd get caught in them either. The one side is not string. It's a pole that opens and closes the blinds. The other side is a set of two strings the raise and lower the blinds. the ends aren't attached. Though our cat likes to play with ribbons, cat toys on strings, fishing type cat toys, and this long fuzzy thing my nephews gave her for Christmas, we've never seen her playing with the cords on the blinds.

If the blinds are down and she wants to look out the window she'd bang on the blinds until we raise them for her. If I don't raise the ones in my room as soon as I get up in the morning she bangs on them. When she gets tired of waiting (or I forget to raise them before I leave the house) she decides to squeeze her way through them. My sisters blinds are bent in several places!

LL
I meant to tell you when we ran into you tonight that the blind cords are separate at the bottom. Somehow she got tangled up in them. If it wouldn't effect being able to raise and lower the blinds, I'd cut the stings of completely! When I had the window replaced on the second floor I wanted to get the windows with the blinds between the two pains of glass; but my sister talked me out of it. Wish I didn't listen to her!

BTW Did the dog finally get a hold of someone's ice cream?

Ima-
That's what happen with the strings on our blinds the other day. Now that we're aware of what can happen we're making sure the strings are where she can reach them.

Is someone taking care of the cat? Maybe someone should call the JAC? The poor thing. It makes my blood boil when people dump defenseless animals.

Fab-
I didn't know they made anything like that! Thanks for telling us. If you post where to buy them I'll go buy some. We have a lot of windows so I'd feel bad if you sent them for free.

Shanabana
Our cat likes to play inside those bags too! She'll jump in them all the time. I'm always concerned she's going to suffocate. We now make sure we tie the handles together or cut them so nothing happens to her. You are so right about them being like babies and getting into stuff.

I don't think you were around when we first got her back in Nov 2003. She got herself tangled in the handle of a mess / canvas laundry basket and the Nintendo cord in my nephew's room. If my nephew hadn't gone upstairs when he did the cat would have been toast. We had to cut the handles on the laundry basket as well as the Nintendo cord.

We've also had to cut at least three collars off she was choking on.

Dear Aunt,

Everyone loves the cat. Nobody can take him. I saved my quota already.
He's gotten good at dodging the trucks, but don't know how many of his
nine lives he's gone through.

I wonder if JAC is all filled up already. Well, let's hope we
can find him a home first. But thanks for the suggestion!
