How often do you block out disturbing thoughts about your life with soothing thoughts of the Internet? How often do you feel preoccupied with the Internet when off-line, or fantasize about being on-line? Have you ever become physically intimate with your mouse, keyboard, trac ball or other pointing device? OK, I made that last one up... but I have to say, these are scary questions. I got a 28, by the way.

37 You are an average on-line user. You may surf the Web a bit too long at times, but you have control over your usage. Wow. I guess I don't have to feel guilty about how much time I spend online at work anymore. Either that, or maybe we're just doomed as a society............ |

29...but I have safety valves in place...like the friend of my wife's who tells her when she thinks Ive been posting too much (if youre reading...Hi!) or the neighbor who told me she hasnt seen me posting much lately (either she is right or she's missed some sections...and if youre reading...Hi!). I think a very interesting thing that cant be factored in is the MOL dynamic...most online communities dont run so closely parallel to a real actual community as MOL does to life in Maplewood/South Orange...there is a lot of legitimate time cross-over (a lot not so legit either too, of course). |

I think that when I answered some questions, like the ones below, I chose Does Not Apply, since rarely doesn't mean, this doesn't effect me. 3. How often do you prefer the excitement of the Internet to intimacy with your partner? 6. How often do your grades or school work suffer because of the amount of time you spend on-line? 8. How often does your job performance or productivity suffer because of the Internet? 9. How often do you become defensive or secretive when anyone asks you what you do on-line? 10. How often do you block out disturbing thoughts about your life with soothing thoughts of the Internet? 11. How often do you find yourself anticipating when you will go on-line again? 12. How often do you fear that life without the Internet would be boring, empty, and joyless? 15. How often do you feel preoccupied with the Internet when off-line, or fantasize about being on-line? 18. How often do you try to hide how long you've been on-line? 19. How often do you choose to spend more time on-line over going out with others? 20. How often do you feel depressed, moody, or nervous when you are off-line, which goes away once you are back on-line?

Before I take the test, what do you think my score will be? It won't be good; that's for sure.

Tom, the test isn't so much about HOW MUCH you use the web but rather how much that use interferes with your work, our relatonships and your mental health. |

Yeah, but with a score of 57, the answer to the critical question isn't very good.

I took the test and got a 29 As I was taking the test I wondered why there was no answer "never". Then I realized "Does not apply" means never, so I went back and took it again and got a 23: You are an average on-line user. 42, but I put "rarely" when I would have prefered to say, "never." "Does not apply" seemed like a poor alternative. Also, I neglect my e-mail BECAUSE I'm on MOL. I've actually said, "No I didn't get your e-mail, you should have just posted it on MOL." That should be an additional 10 points. J.B. I can't believe I scored higher than Monster. |
