If you set your browser to reload an MOL page every few minutes, MOL will think you're on all the time. Not sure if that's useful in any way, but I thought I would mention it.

Technical question: If a person has multiple virtual personality syndrome, having established multiple usernames on MOL and the person posts using each of these names in succession, without closing the MOL program between making these posts, will each of the multiple usernames appear as being on line or will each name replace the name before it in the who's on line window? Disclosure: I have only one username account on MOL and therefore cannot try this our myself. |

On behalf of several other MOLers who legitmately browse without logging on while we live in other timezones at odds with your sleeping time, we're not all here with evil-intent. Oftentimes I have nothing to contribute or no time in which to conribute it - just want to see who's up, what's up in your part of the world and if I can help. You can read without loggin on, as has been mentioned on this thread many times, and you'll appear as a guest. Oh, and sometimes - very rarely these days - I just lurk out of boredom |

Joan, I don't know about discus, the messageboard here on MOL, but I know a few things about the web. Your browser requests a page, and the server sends it to your browser. If it's a static page, such as those here on the messageboard, the server doesn't know if you're reading it or how long you read it. So this whos-online service must assume that you're "on" for a while after you request a page. There is almost always no feedback from browser to server when you switch to something else or close your browser. So the information can't be accurate, because of assumptions of time. If I wrote the software, I would write it to assume that you're "on" for 5 to 15 minutes after your last page request. But the best you can do is make a guess like that. The concept of "on" and "off" are abstract, and they don't match the way the web transactions really work. Each page and graphic is another transaction.

Hey Lizziecat, when I feel that I don't have a life - I turn to MOL and note that my friends are mostly all asleep and that's why I have no 'life'!! Time zones can add heaps of exotic ambience to social lives. Then, to save my hubby's supposedly mega huge download thingy's before we get cut-back as our ration is up, I browse and get off MOL - hence remaining a guest who is not logged on. (Anything untoward that happens with the downloads is always my fault as I don't have anything to do with them!) Dave: If I go back to edit my message partway through typing, why can't I insert an emoticon in a previous chunk? It always goes to the end of the last sentence, not the last bit typed. And Dave, we need one of these: with martini glasses or something cocktail-y for those of us who don't drink beer all the time! Ta muchly. |

Not sure why that is. I'll take the martini icon under consideration. also, there's a new feature on the Who's Online page. |

Well, I just came back after cleaning the house, playing in the garden (planting roses, pruning stuff, washing the car....you know the routine) and booted hubby off the workstation. Wow! Dave, that's just magical! Fancy all those people checking out Please Help at 2 am!!!! Gotta go so my David can do some manual writing, but again - Wow! Sometimes I am just speechless, in awe of your talent! |
