Yesterday, Mr. BGS and I went to church with friends to thie church, Marble Collegiate at 29th and 5th Avenue in New York City. This church started in March of this year, to put ribbons on their iron gates, surrounging the front and side of the church, a ribbon with the name of a soldier that has been killed in Iraq. Every Sunday, the minister, Dr. Arthur Caliandro, reads the names of this week's soldiers who have perished, and their ribbons are added to the fence. We have been to this church before but yesterday was first time since the ribbons have been put up. The service was dedicated to our military, as I am sure it was in many other houses of worship this weekend. What was neat for us was that after church, while I went to the bathroom, Mr. BGS went outside with our friends to look at the ribbons, and Mr. BGS found Augie's ribbon...the third one that he looked at. Nothing will ever bring Augie back to us, but seeing his name on that fence, on this day, made me prouder that ever of his sacrifice for every single one of us. In no way do I support this war, however, I am so proud of the men and women that took the oath and are doing what they have been ordered to do for you and me. |

BGS: One of our local girl scout troops (3rd grade girls from Clinton School) dedicated their march in the Memorial Day Parade this morning to Augie's memory. As a departure from traditional practice, Augie's name was read at roll call during this morning's Memorial Day ceremony along with the names of recently departed members of the VFW and the American Legion and a moment of silence was added so that each of us could remember our dearly departed servicemen and women in our own way. A great many of us had the opportunity to remember Augie today. |

Joan - It may have been "a departure from traditional practice", but in a larger sense, it is a "departure from traditional practice" to have an active duty death affect our community. It's been a long time, and unfortunately it has happened again. Thank you for today's ceremony. Corporal Schroeder's parents have a tribute to him at their website, Families of the Fallen for Change. Their tribute can be viewed at this link - http://www.bobstewartband.com/mm/augie

Nohero: So true. Thank you for the link. Let us hope such a departure will never be needed again. |

The peace memorial in the Ethical Culture Society garden was re-dedicated in Augie's memory on March 18, 2006. http://www.beaboutpeace.com/archives/2006/03/post_41.html South Mountain Peace Action and Families of the Fallen for Change are co-sponsoring a Petition for a Responsible Withdrawal from Iraq which combines the proposal of FoF and Congressman John Murtha (www.BeAboutPeace.com). The petition is a follow-up to our February 8, 2006 forum at St. George's Church which featured Paul Schroeder and Rosemary Palmer. We will deliver the petitions to Senators Lautenberg and Menendez and Congressmen Payne and Pascrell within the next several weeks. If anyone would like to assist in circulating the petitions, please contact me at paul4sure@aol.com or 973-763-9493.
