I didn't eat dinner, but I haven't shut my face. Since 3 pm I have ingested: 1 Coke and bourbon 1 Coke without bourbon 2 leftover ribs with sauce A few spoonfuls of riccotta chese (shared with a cat) 3 pickles 1 brownie (Ess baked!) almost one gallon of water a few chugs of carrot juice and it's not even 10 pm....

Back on topic. I've been home since 7:30 and have eaten: Two more ribs (found them buried in the back - oh! what a day!) Two bites of chicken feature #3 from Whole Foods 3 celiegine mozzarella balls two spoons riccotta cheese Lots of water A few gulps of milk (straight from the container, of course) I need produce. There is none in my fridge except applesauce.

Applesauce as produce. What's the "use by" date? Today I've eaten a roll, half an apple, a rice/black bean/steak/cheese/salsa/sour cream/guacaomle/lettuce burrito that could flatten the faint-hearted, and leftovers from last night's Whole Foods dinner: mushroom and spinach lasagne (delicious). I award Jersey Boy my Best Menu award and ask what time should I show up next Memorial Day? |

Ew. You all are making me very hungry, especially las, who can spoon ricotta. I want to, but I cant. Me: Just coffee, 1 1/2 cups, 1/2 slice of old pizza, one glass of chardonnay/working on #2, and a handful of freshly-made crumbled bacon? Still waiting for the balance of the family to arrive... |

Dinner: Zha Jiang Mian
Zha jiang mian (literal translation: fried paste noodles) is one of the most famous Beijing dishes (next to Peking duck and a few dozen other items) and is probably the precursor to spaghetti Bolognese. The fried paste is a dark soybean paste and it's mixed with ginger and pork. The sauce tends to be fairly salty, so a little goes a long way. Optionally you can add cucumber, radish, cilantro, hot pepper (fresh) and/or Beijing vinegar and mix it all up. Using fresh pasta is a must. While it doesn't look like much, it is indescribably delicious. On really hot days the noodles are served cold. Lunch: Zongzi
Zongzi. Pyramid shaped rice dumplings. Basically glutinous rice sometimes combined with meat, peanuts and/or eggs or other items, then wrapped in a lotus leaf (which you don't eat) and steamed. The origins are supposedly traced to a disconsolate poet, Qu Yuan, who drowned himself in a river called during the fall of his country Chu (prior to a unified China). To stop the fish from eating his body, people made rice dumplings and threw them into the river. I guess they could have simply taken his body out of the water, but then we wouldn't have zongzi. You can dip them in sugar, if you like. |
