Went outside this morning and found a dead BAT! on my driveway, to see some pictures click here Yesterday my neighbor yelled for me to come outside, seems there was a bat in stuck in some ornamental grass in the garden, and one of her dogs was going nuts trying to get at it through the fence. By the time I made it outside she had kicked the fence, the bat had extricated itself and flew off. Now I would bet that the one I found in the driveway is the same one from yesterday, the animal control officer said that a sick bat that couldn't fly so well would try to find shelter somewhere low, I guess under the car counts. We also found out that besides getting rabies from a bat bite, bats also transmit rabies through the air, as in being breathed on by a bat. Anyway, enjoy the pics |

I'm not trying to start any rumors, but I have never seen Buzzsaw and Batman in the same place at the same time. |

So are you and the kid in the pictures getting the rabies shots? It sounds like you should. You've been exhibiting some of the symptoms of rabies for a while now. J.B. |

I probably gave it to the bat, but I have to say the the foaming at my mouth is barely noticeable now, but I still have a powerful thirst, perhaps mojitos later will help with that. |

My neighbor's son in law had a bat in his home terrorizing the wife & kids. He calls the police who tell him to call animal control who finally show up after a couple of hours. But....in the mean time, the guy hunts down the bat with his shop vac and the critter gets stuck in the hose. He doesn't sweat it 'cuz at least the family is safe. When the animal people show up they get the bat out and proceed to rip the guy a new anus because it turns out that the bat is a rare species and now has a broken wing. Cooler minds prevailed and he was let go with a warning. |

Monster- It could be worse! The bat could have been flying around your house trying to peck your head like the one(s) in our house a few months ago! My poor sister was screaming for help. The police had to come to our house twice that night. The first time the officer thought the bat had flown out the door when nobody was looking. Little did we know the bat was just hiding waiting for it's chance to attack! It was comical though to watch when they came back the second time to find my brother in law hiding in the den with the door closed. My sister and I hiding in our rooms, peeking out to watch then slamming the doors shut when the bat would fly upstairs. One officer was chasing the bat with a can of hair spray, the other a tennis racket. They finally got it about 15 minutes later. The things our poor officers have to do in the name of duty. We felt pretty bad for them, but we are pretty sure they had a good laugh at our expense beginning with the dispatcher. "South Orange Police, is this an emergency?" "Not exactly" "What seems to be the problem" "A bat is attacking my sister. Can you please send the officer back from earlier?" "A bat?" "Yes a bat! My sister is trapped in her room with pillows on her head because it keeps trying to bite her" "Do you mean a baseball bat?" "NO!!! A REAL BAT!!!" Ah, okay we'll send someone over" "Thanks!!!" "Knock Knock Knock. South Orange Police. We have a report of a bat attacking someone" "Yell Yell Scream Scream. It just went downstairs. Slam go the doors." Oh yeah what a fun night that was! NOT! My sister wasn't very happy the next day when my nephews and I hung a real looking bat in the blinds above her bed!

I just found an injured but alive bat in lot 12 in South Orange. (the lot across from Rite Aid) I called animal control but they were gone for the day. I was directed to call the police who then told me that they would contact animal control. I asked if I should stay by it, as it is quite small and could easily be missed. The dispatcher told me "No. Don't go near it because if you try to touch it, it may bite you." I was not planning on trying to touch it or go that close...just near enough so I could direct the police/animal control people to it. I also do not want any children walking through the lot to naively try to pick it up. I think I may go back down to wait for them. I wonder why we are seeing so many bats sick or injured. This guy was definitely sick - pulling himself along with his wings, then laying there for awhile, pulling himself around again. Poor guy! |

South Orange and Maplewood are home to a great number of bats. When the population gets too large, they start spreading illness (not always rabies) in the colonies. Thereafter we start seeing them during the day when they are too weak / disorientated to get back to their roosts. If you ever see a bat during the day, you really really really shouldn't touch them. Eventually, the birds will spot them. If you are faced with a bat inside the house and can't shoo it out then get a tennis racquet. It is pretty easy to hit a bat with a tennis racquet (and almost impossible to hit it with a broom) because by the time the bat senses the webbing, it is too late for it to turn away. If you give it a light pop, you can stun it. Slide it into a cardboard box and quickly put outside. When the bat comes to, it will fly away. |

The image of hitting bats with tennis rackets is pretty cool. though I absolutely adore bats. Love the pix! I saw on tv that we should be making little houses for them to put on our houses, to increase the range of their habitat. Hmmmm. Not sure what I think of that... |
