I'd prefer a period of comfortable warm weather with screens in all the windows and a pleasant breeze, but it's like the weather went from cool to unbearably hot and humid over the weekend. Is it time to pop the window units in the windows and clam up the whole house already? I don't want to but I'm sweaty, and frankly, a little stinky. Where are others in this decision making process? We caved in yesterday and installed our window units. That whole process made me think of getting central air installed (again! I go through this every year, and yet we still have no C/A). We may cool down a bit tomorrow. But yesterday was just too much for me. |

We never take ours out. They're on now, and it's great. |

We don't take ours out either. In all year round. Although this year we did upgrade the bedroom unit to a quieter, more efficient and automated model. I bought it yesterday, and can't wait to install it tonight. |

Installing CAC reduced the number of arguments in my marriage by at least 2 per year. The "putting the window units in" argument, the "taking them out" argument and the sporadic "should we or shouldn't we put them in/take them out" arguments. Since I have no upper body strength whatsoever & short stubby arms, I was pretty much useless in helping to carry the damned things up & down the attic/basement stairs. I solved this problem by whining so much that, after the argument, Xena would get someone else to help her. Which, invariably, would lead to having to wait until it was convenient, which meant an extra night or so of miserable sleeping. The last couple of years before the CAC, she'd line someone up ahead of time, so I didn't have to whine. But, CAC definitely relieved a lot of stress.
BTW - I broke down and turned it on last night. |

I'm printing this thread and giving it to my mom! She thinks it's too early to turn it on. The rest of us (five plus the cat) want it on. Supposedly the temp is going to drop tonight because of rain. If it doesn't, one of the window units is going in tomorrow! Especially since my doctor told me this morning I needed to stay in air conditioning to prevent stressing out my heart. I wonder if the library was able to get theirs fixed! Think I'll spend the day there! |

Yes, J.B., mine are in and on as well. Although, in the interest of full disclosure, the unit downstairs is always in the window. It went on for the first time on Sunday night. I have no tolerance for the sauna-like conditions in my house, and to preserve my mood and sanity, the AC's go on at the first sign of discomfort. |

J.B. - Glad to hear they're in and they're on! Hubby (and help) installed ours on Saturday. Just remember, you don't have to clam up the whole house because there are still plenty of screened windows that can be opened up when we have more spring like weather! Especially if Monster is right about the evening's prediction. |

Tototoo, you're lucky to have multiple windows in every room. It's a tough choice every year to put the bedroom AC in, as there's only one window in there. I put it off as long as possible, but Sunday I had to do it because the weather was messing with my breathing. If temperate climes prevail, I'll certainly turn off my ACs and open windows. Infinitely preferable. Spring is so spring, isn't it? There's no place like home! |

We stagger them in. So at this point I have installed 4 units in essential areas. As it gets hotter, the rest will be put into place. I don't do the reverse in the fall though -- they stay put till we have to start running the furnace, at which point I pull them all out quick.
