Love, love, love a good thunderstorm. Particularly when the temperature drop about 20 degrees in 10 minutes! Child #3 is apparently not that crazy about them though!

Red, weren't you a little apprehensive about the lightening and kids being outside!

Red,

Don't listen to Meandtheboys. We were flying a kite tonight. A little history mixed with science.

Cool.

I don't like thunderstorms at all! And I had to drive in it! Glad it's over. At least it's only 69 degrees now instead of 94 degrees.

But what about the animals?

I'm always a little uneasy when I have to reassure an animal that doom isnt coming. Aren't they supposed to know that better than us?

Thunder=dog panic attack.

And we don't have any doggie Valium.

We took it ourselves. And that includes table food.

Diazepam is a benzodiazepine tranquilizer. Drugs in this class act directly on the brain and are central nervous system (CNS) depressants. Although the precise mechanism of action is not fully known, specific benzodiazepine receptors have been found in the brain and other tissues including the heart, kidney, liver and lungs. Diazepam is used clinically for sedation, to diminish anxiety or modify behavior, as a muscle relaxant, an anticonvulsant, and in some species as an appetite stimulant. It may be administered intra-venously, intra-muscularly, orally and rectally via suppository or enema. Diazepam is metabolized by the liver to nordiazepam and other active metabolites. They are excreted in the urine.

Dogs and Cats

Diazepam can be used as a sedative either alone or in combination with other drugs. It is considered a relatively safe pre-operative sedative for patients with underlying cardiac or metabolic diseases because it causes minimal cardiopulmonary side effects and provides good muscle relaxation. It may be used in combination with ketamine for induction of anesthesia.

Diazepam is used in both dogs and cats as an anti-anxiety drug and for the treatment of many behavioral problems including some stereotypic behaviors. These behaviors include separation anxiety, fear of loud noises or thunderstorms, territorial or social aggression between animals, urine marking or spraying, and hair loss due to excessive licking or grooming. Diazepam can be used to treat aggressive dogs in order to make them more manageable although occasional individuals can have a contradictory reaction and become more aggressive. If diazepam is used in a potentially aggressive animal, it is important to be aware of this possibility, warn the animal's handler, and take appropriate precautions. Because diazepam causes drowsiness and decreased coordination, it may impair the ability of working dogs. Diazepam alone is less likely to be effective as a sedative when used in an animal that is already excited.

Diazepam is frequently used in the treatment of seizures. It is the treatment of choice for clusters of seizures or status epilepticus in both dogs and cats. It is used in the emergency treatment of seizures due to poisoning or intoxication. It is also used for the long-term management of seizures in cats (either alone or in combination with other drugs). Diazepam is not as commonly used in the long-term management of epilepsy in the dog because it loses effectiveness within a few weeks. Other drugs such as phenobarbital or potassium bromide are more commonly used for this purpose in dogs.

Diazepam is used as a muscle relaxant either alone or in combination with other drugs. It can be used to treat pain and muscle spasm associated with many conditions including inter-vertebral disc disease, urethral obstruction, muscle cramping, tremors and tetanus.
It is used in combination with corticosteroids to treat "Little White Shakers" Syndrome in Maltese and West Highland white terriers.

Diazepam is a powerful appetite stimulant in the cat.

I was trapped in a hotel dining room for a work function with 200 other schmoes and could hear the eerie thunder booming far off. It felt like I was in hell as I sat listening to painful goopy speech after goopy speech, eyes glazed over, rousing occasionally to teach the tablemates how to make bras out of the linen napkins when all the lights went out for almost a minute. I thought there was a god after all and we could all leave and go home, but no, the lights came on, all us schmoes laughed, the goopy speeches resumed and my belief that satan is in charge was reinstated once again.

Wait, were we discussing thunderstorms? Sorry!

I was coming across the GWB when the worst of it hit, with my wonderfully beautiful OCD child. Full throttle lightening everywhere and a downpour. He's a bit frantic that we aren't on the lower level. HIM: Why didn't you take the lower level? We wouldn't be in the rain ME: I have fears of the lower level, I can't drive on them. Then he starts loving the lightening which I keep on thinking is going to hit the bridge.

More of his (and my) OCD, he can't stand elevators, I can't stand stairs. He has to be in the city almost everyday and we take numerous elevators. So, we check out both of the stairs and elevators and whoever is the least apprehensive gets to choose their mode of elevation and decention. Needless to say, we have walked up some 15 or more flights of stairs...

It is not a pretty sight.

My brother-in-lewd works with adults with severe autism. He had two clients living together in the same house, one couldn't stand to have doors open, one couldn't stand to have doors closed. They followed each other around all day opening and closing. That is Harry and me.

And if I were along I could hopefully offer some sooth to both of you. Life has no logic, that's what makes it so totally cool. I love the fact that OCD kid got into the lightning - you can always give him that bull line about cars/rubber tires/blah de blah blah blah.

That said, I'm a thunderstorm buff from wayyyy back and this one scared me a bit.

I apologize for my crass comment above. I don't know what I was thinking, JustMeLaura, and I'm sure your son is delightful. My brain failed to read the second paragraph of your post (it's a highly annoying condition and tends to get me into lots of trouble!). Hopefully, I can meet your son in the near future so I can (more hopefulness) exonerate myself!

ohgoodness, no bets. I didn't find anything crass at all. You should see him right now. He's asleep on the couch with his head off the couch and his feet up on the wall. As I was gripping the steering wheel while driving waiting for him to have a melt down about the lightening, he started to talk about how cool Benjamin Franklin was. Also, he kept on talking about how we couldn't be hit by lightening because we weren't the tallest metal object around and kept on pointing to all these different towers. 'See mom, it would hit that first. Doesn't it look cool? I wish I had a camera'

Mem,
Oh thanks and kisses, they really are. I don't know where they came from.

Well, I know a Charlie IRL who is so intelligent he can't relate to kids his own age. Thankfully, the older he gets the narrower the divide becomes.

That is so cool, Laura. It reminds me of me, and I am my mom's 11th child. Wasn't she lucky? It turned out that I was just like her, and more luck luck luckily we got to enjoy that awareness for a few years.

Your son sounds precious and precocious. As the magic 8-ball would say: "Outlook good."

OMG, you guys, thanks so much for a well-needed laugh. Tears are streaming down my face. The goopy speeches and bras out of table napkins, and fears of driving on the lower level and/or upper level, and doors open and doors closed. OMG. I am so freaked out about stuff right now that I am utterly unable to sleep, and I'm so exhausted I think I might die, but that laugh you guys gave me was just perfect.

Now where do I go to find help with a really good cry? And some really strong drugs to knock me out for a good 12 hours?

Okay ME, strong drugs, easy. Place to cry? Rent a sad movie, then you can crash in our guest basement for twelve hours :-)

I don't know why I wasn't nervous with my kids outside. We were on the front porch....I grew up in AZ where beautiful Lightening/Thunderstorms are common. One of my favorite things to do was sit on our back patio, watching the lightening cracking all over the city, beautiful.

Don't get me wrong I love lightening too. My favorite place is up at our lake house where you can see the lightening across the lake. Too many trees here to really see how spectacular it is. However, sometimes, like the night of this storm, it was clearly just too close for comfort for me. I know my luck, and if I took the kids out to watch, SOMEBODY would get struck!

As far as the other stuff is concerned, had a bit of a mini-breakdown in my kitchen late Friday afternoon when all the little things just became too much. Felt as if some of the tension was released. Then went to a friends and had dinner and drank some wine. Been sleeping better, but still not great. Tonight's another night though, right!

Thanks for the offer of a "guest basement." Getting away to a wedding this Friday, some maybe that'll be something.
