Mrs. J.B. got back from an international trip and brought me two cuban cigars.

When it stops raining I'll go outside (groan) and smoke one.

Anyone done the Newcomer's Club cigar appreciation night?

J.B.

J.B.- Nice pick up! What will your beverage of choice be (if any)- a double Johnnie Walker Blue, neat works for me.

Let's see, I do have a bottle of Middleton, I suppose a cuban cigar qualifies as "a special occasion."

Looks like the smoke has been rained out. It was good to think about it though. This is the problem with such a fancy cigar, I'm too afraid to "mess it up." Maybe tomorrow.

It's only slightly drizzling JB. Show some spine!

And enjoy the smoke!

wait!

Cuban cigars require 78 degrees and a clear sky.

I am the proud owner of 22 LEGAL Cuban cigars, bought before the embargo (by my grandfather) and carefully stored. Nothing makes a week better then checking the humidity, making sure it’s right at 68, then a week before smoking raising it up to 72. Ahhh and to enjoy it with a sharp Port……..

Wow. That is crazy talk, Brett. Will you ever smoke them? I'm of a mind to post my predictions, about your predilections, but I'd like to see what you have to say first.

For the past 4 years I’ve had one on my birthday (Or the following day).
I’m planning to have one the night before my wedding, births, things that call for a great cigar. I don’t think I want to pass smoking on to my kids ;)

I'm with Brett. Wait fora beautiful, clear evening. Sit outside on the patio/deck in a nice, dry chair, with DoC (drink of choice). Savor, enjoy and contemplate.

Standing outside, trying to avoid a dripping gutter would be an insult to the cigars.....

Exactly. If I'm going to do something for an hour that costs more than a two hour movie, I'm going to enjoy it.

Brett,

You can't say it's not humid enough. When it's like this, I open the humidor and leave it that way for a few hours.

I don't have the self control you do, when I get cuban cigars they don't make it through a month.

Brett- I understand your reasoning, but every such occasion brought its own special aura. Discovering a cool, quiet night with nothing pressing and everything as it should be is more than enough reason to settle into a fine smoke. These things can be overanalyzed and microprepared...

Or both special occasions and for a nice calm night. How many did you say you have, Brett?

Brett,

I follow you. And the reason for holding off on the Cubans is more the thought, or the excitement of having one. To be honest in the past few years I found that I enjoy a good Fuente or CAO Corona (surprisingly enough Nicaraguan) just as much. So I save the Cubans for a special event. Something to keep me a little grounded to family and tradition.

Excelsior, Brett- enjoy. Smoke 'em if you got 'em! I'm going to Canada for a wedding next month and plan to indulge every day there.

Brett,

Arturo Fuentes and CAOs are my two favorites also.

Seriously, anyone considered the Maplewood Newcomer's cigar appreciation night?

I never understood the fascination with Cuban cigars. IMO, they're highly overrated. Of the last 3 I had, one left me with a sore throat for 3 days and the other got me lightheaded........well I guess lightheaded isn't exactly a bad thing. BTW, I like a rainy night for a smoke outside, sitting under a large patio umbrella, feet up, drink in hand, rain falling around you........just as good as a calm dry night in my book.

A friend of mine went to a wedding in the Bahamas where there was an old guy hand-rolling cigars who allegedly used to perform the same service for Castro himself at one time. Helluva unique feature for a wedding!

For no particulat reason, I'm having one of the cubans.

Romeo and Julieta, Edicion Limitada 2005.

Yes, I can tell the difference already.
