Just wondering what makes you start to post and then bail. I have written posts and not clicked "post" for the following reasons:

1. Trying to be funny, but wasn't.
2. Trying to be funny, but came out mean.
3. Just started to type and on re-reading, realized I had nothing useful to say.
4. Chickened out on being too controversial.

Any others?

J.B.

I realize there are some who have never canceled a post for any reason. So, Tom Reingold and Monster, I will understand if you have nothing to add.

Sometimes I get called away from the computer & by the time I get back someone else has gotten rid of the post & I don't bother to go back to it

You probably should have canceled that.

# 3 is usually the reason for me, followed by #1.

In fact, #3 is currently the case, and I probably should cancel it, but I won't.

Usually #4ish. Not because I don't want to be controversial, but because I don't feel like putting the time in to back up my controversial post. Sometimes it just isn't worth the time of telling someone why they are wrong or where they can shove it.

That's interesting, Mayor. When I was just lurking, I read a lot of debates that never got resolved well. I would read and think, "I should post on this topic, I think it'd be really helpful."

Now that I have posted in some controvertial debates, I realize that was a fantasy. So reason #6:

It just doesn't matter, you can't convince some people of what is obviously THE TRUTH to J.B.

J.B.

Is there anyone who HASN'T done this? For at least one, if not all of the reasons mentioned?

I often just decide that I don't have the energy to defend whatever it was I was going to say or don't have enough invested in the issue, so I'll let someone else do it.

I cancel the post because I start to answer something and get so carried away with my response and then think that I have rambled or that I have offered too many opinions or that I am not as well informed about something as I should be to comment on it...
I have also cancelled something that I did post because I realized that there was a spelling error!

Sometimes I realize in the middle of typing a response that there is a whole wide world out there and here I am sitting here missing it all and I just run screaming out into the wilderness. If you're reading this I guess it didn't happen this time.

Ahh...QC, I think you're still ahead of me in post volume. Usually, when I delete its because something happened in the middle of my post, and when I return to it, its no longer funny/relevant, or I realize it doesn't come across the way I mean it to.

#7 I wrote something about one of the annoying personalities here and realized that it's against my own policy to do that. It gives them too much limelight and credibility.

Sometimes it just takes too much time to post it right (have any integrity to my post).

Sometimes, I start one, get distracted (usually by work) and when I come back to it I see that someone posted something similar to what I was going to write. I generally try not to be a "me too" poster.

Sometimes, I can't be bothered to find the links that would supplement the post.

Sometimes I realize I can't get through to the person who I am responding to (for the 100th time -- usually in the Political Soapbox).

Sometimes, I go on a quest for just the right image (for the Virtual Cafe Random Photo project) and realize that one I was about to post just doesn't feel right to me.

Sometimes, I realize that no matter how eloquent my post is (or isn't) that my position is just flat out wrong and I'm just being argumentative or playing devil's advocate or I am bored and trying to entertain myself.

There are plenty of more reasons.
