So, I have noticed lately that a lot of people are online, but just not posting. What are you doing if you aren't posting? (if that makes sense....) |

It's those people online that you can't see, that you need to wonder about! |

All of us until we actually post or login for any reason are guests. Browsers. While we're browsing, we're guests. And there's nothing wrong with that - what did you do on the first day you read Maplewood Online's Forum? I invented a username that fit me and then went to the real name (bets) a month later. I've referred people I like and trust to this forum, and also some family. I think the Ross Bros. (and us) have created an easy place to be for the most part. We're all guests here and everywhere and we're lucky enough to enjoy each and every moment Peace.

bets, don't get me wrong, I am reading sometimes too. I was just wondering because as I am posting, I get bored sometimes, waiting for others to post and no one does. So I was wondering what they are doing. Does that make more sense? |

redy67, it makes total sense. I am an addict. I've admitted it to my boss, to my therapist, to my friends (many incredible friendships from this very website!), to my employees. I am too honest here, and I know that. But I do not want to compromise honesty and if people are afraid to speak or post or whatever, at least they're lurking. Not posting. They're hopefully reaping something from this amazing website: the courage to leave or be left; the courage to stop or be stopped; the venue that is here, anonymously or otherwise, for questions or feedback or to help others. Love that avatar. Brunettes are beautiful and nobody forgets that. |

I'm addicted too. The other night hubby said I was spending too much time online. I can think of reasons people might be online but not posting. I sometimes post a message, but I'll have multiple windows open. This first post records me as "online," but then I minimize the window and go onto other stuff. You'll see me listed online, but you won't see any new postings |

Multitasking is always a burden, comb. I suggest relaxing and figuring out which facet is most annoying. And then minimizing it. |

I'm online and not posting ('til now). Just was catching up on the evening's postings. Otherwise, there are times when I read and all I can think of posting is a smartass response, an urge that, in most cases, I can overcome. |

A bad cold will do that to you... that and a child crawling into your bed at 2.38am, kicking you "out of her way" etc etc, then No.2 crawling in, after that I just couldn't sleep!!! |

Yes, I understand that all too well. My daughter does the same thing. She'll crawl into bed with me and my hubby, and start "kicking me out of her way" until I finally get up and go to her room... |

Holy cow, what a bad pattern, letting the kids get their way from the getgo. Tell them they can get in your bed, but only for a minute, then they have to go back to THEIR OWN bed. |

Nah, this was a one off.... My Husband got them both back into their beds within about 10 mins, but it was too late for me, sniffly, achy, sore throat, and like a bear with a sore head, so I was done for the night!! |

I think that my cookies or whatever are set so that whenever my browser is open, I show up online. I dunno. At dinner last night, one brother was filling in another on my MOL habit. The other brother is on his local Town Council. Ah, you are the kind of people that make our lives miserable, he states. No, no. I don't pick on our elected officials. Just other people. S-I-L & TS offer that if I am anywhere near a keyboard, all they hear is "clickclickclickclick". Just what do you do online all that time? asks Brother1? She picks fights with people, answers Brother3. Not true, I protest. Which reminds me, Ess: why would anyone want to control a smartass response? |

Who's on line but not shown as posting? 1. Persons who have requested that their on line status not be revealed. 2. Persons who read threads before posting to them. 3. Persons who take more than 15 minutes to make a single post. (Dave recently posted that a post is only good for 15 minutes of "on line" time before the poster reverts to guest status). 4. True lurkers who don't have MOL accounts. 5. Persons attempting to do an on-line search using the MOL search engine. |

That's B.S. I'm always on the who's on line box, even if I'm just reading. However, I never log off... For those of us who are regular posters. The question is more, why do you post? This whole environment is a reality show in real time. We are the exhibitionists, and we ask what's the deal with the voyeurs. J.B. |

JB - I don't know, that must vary poster to poster then. I've been 'lurking' for a while and my name never came up (I'm also online all the time just like you). If I post, though, or even log off so that I can actually log on, my name instantly appears. Just did that and now I'm listed. |

Why do the more frequent posters post? I was just reading in the newspaper that a recent study shows that persons in the US today have significantly fewer close friends than they did ten years ago. This has been attributed to increased use of technological devices such as surfing the internet, longer working hours, and longer commutes among other factors. MOL is a positive way of couneracting that trend. Many of us get an instant sense of connectedness from participating in MOL discussions and in the IRL activities which grow out of some of these discussions. |

Right on Joan! I am a true night person who often lives the hours when not working. Sometimes At 2 or 3AM it's nice to feel a connectedness... Obviously I can't just pick up the phone at that hour (unless I ever get my hands on Joanne's number. Hmmm here's a thought). |
