I've never seen this before, but it's great for runners/walkers/cyclists -- you can map out a course and it calculates the mileage. So, if you want to go on a 5 mile run, you can plug in the coordinates to figure out what your route should be. You first enter the state and city at the top and then press Start Recording on the left. Then double click to place markers on the map - it calculates the mileage at the lef.

Very cool.

Nice! Now I know I walk just about exactly two miles a day on my commute, following my usual route (but not counting transfer at Hoboken for PATH or all those stairs at the WTC station. I also like the calories-burned-counter function but I wonder whether this takes terrain into account. For instance, climbing Oakview in the evening must require a lot more calories than walking through Memorial Park along Oakview Avenue.

Thanks so much for the link.

ML:

You would thnk it would be but try ducking the flying newspapers (from the slalom racing newspaper delivery vans), avoiding the crumbing sections of sidewalk totally worn out in some sections whose hazards are not visible in the semi-darkness, assorted tree litter and other trip hazards, etc. These early morning obstracles easily counteract the ease of motion one would expect.

I used to live at the "summit" of Oakview, and would tell people it was walking distance to the train station, but not from the station.
