http://www.searsarchives.com/homes/index.htm Pretty cool Sears Archive on the homes they used to sell, do you recognize any as being homes in Maplewood/South Orange, do you live in one? Under Images Of Homes on the left you can select a range of years and view homes from that time period. |

Wow, Our house is almost exactly like "The Rembrandt", even the floor plan is almost the same. The time frame 1921-26 is also correct. Oh no, please don't tell me I live in a mail order house. |

I like the Glen Ridge, at $4398. That's still only $50k & change in 2006 dollars. Throw in the lot & not too shabby. |

Jean Sheppard did a wonderful segment of a kit home that was delivered to a family in Youngstown, Ohio. The kit arrived on a box car and the entire town came to watch the house being delivered by railroad. The owner received the packing instructions from the freightman and the box car was emptied on the railroad siding. The first thing the packing slip said was not to open any packages until the number of packages was counted and confirmed. But it was too late. On-lookers could not wait for the inventory process to complete, stopped being on-lookers and began opening boxes to see how a house could come in a box. Mr. Jenkins began calling for people to stop opening boxes but the box-openers could not hear him over the frenzy of ripping and cutting of boxes. Then it began to rain. As quickly as they assembled with the arrival of the train, the neighbors returned to their cars and left the railroad yard. The last thing Sheppard recalled was Mr. Jenkins standing in the rain, packing slip in hand, with tears coming down is cheeks calling for people not to leave. |

There's a house for sale on Midland that I think is "The Osborn" http://www.searsarchives.com/homes/1927-1932.htm (MLS 2253020). There's also another one on Midland that't "The Barrington" http://www.searsarchives.com/homes/1927-1932.htm |

Too cute. Some of those houses are really fabulous. And quite a few look exactly like some homes I've seen here in Maplewood. |

There's a small modular house being built on Hobart Ave in Short Hills. Once they are done you can't tell the difference from a stick built house. But it is a little bizarre to see an empty lot and then the full structure of a house the next day. |

There are more kit houses around these towns than you think. Many have had changes made to them over the years, so they are sometimes difficult to identify. There were also many companies in the kit business and used similar designs. I know of two Sears "Americus" houses. One is in South Orange and the other is in Millburn.
Click the link to see it full size: http://www.searsarchives.com/homes/images/1927-1932/1928_p13063.jpg The one in South Orange sold in March and is on Meeker (hope the new owners don't mind): The one in Millburn last sold in 2001. Me, I live in a Bennett house...

I have always been a little skeptical about Sears (and their competitors) houses in this area. However, Kevin just convinced me they do exist. From what I have read most of the compondents are stamped or branded with the Sears logo along with a part number so checking it out shouldn't be that hard. Also, be aware that authenticated Sears homes actually sell for a premium. In 21st Century America they are a nostalgia item. |

I would like to know if anyone knows of a place where one could verify if the home was indeed a Sears home....our house in Aberdeen Twp aka Cliffwood Beach resembles the Fairy circa 1924

Our 1927 house is The Van Jean. Year exactly right. Floor plan exactly as is shown. Interesting. No wonder the Kenmore dryer works great! What's really fascinating is reading the options, both of which the original owners exercised. No sun room, and the rooms are reversed. |

Psycho, components are stamped or branded with the Sears brand and have part numbers on them. Look in the basement at the floor joists.

There was an article on this subject a few years ago either in the Star Ledger or News Record....I think I still have it. I wish houses were still built like the older homes-rock solid. I can't stand modern building "plastic" houses we get now. |

We have a newcastle--the floor plan matches, though there have been some changes to closet configuration and added sunroom. Very cool site. Very cool houses! |

BTW why all the "Oh no"s? Couldn't y'all see that the houses around here are all a little similar? Just goes to show that once upon a time, stuf for the "masses" was a bit more quality than today. |

Any idea whether the logo would be on the bottom or on the side of the joist hanger? |

Whoever thinks that they live in a kit house, can you check something? (duder) Look in your basement near your furnace or possibly outside for the chimney cleanout door and tell me if it says anything? Some of the kit manufacturers used to stamp their company logo on this door. I am wondering if Sears was one of them.
