Although both teams played poorly, England looked the better skilled. They played them almost even for half the match even with a man down.

Either one of them would have lost against Brazil next round anyway.

Go Brazil!

Bajou!!!!!!!! Shame on you..

We were robbed.... we had an Argentinian ref, there were bad calls made, Beckham was out, Rooney should have been given a yellow card if anything not a red, and what the heck was that with the disallowed goal on PK time???

As I left from watching it, I was told the reason that they disallowed it. was that he made the kick before the whistle was blown, BUT that one of the Portuguese players had done the same thing and no problem.....

A dirty and very sad way to lose..

As a wonderful man said today, the better team lost...

Dear Sopa:

I didn't mean yeehaa for the british but Yeeaaha for the Germans as per Monsters post.

I am not even going to pretend to know a darn thing about soccer but I am sorry that your team lost. The least you deserve is a Wold Cup! LOL

I now view the World Cup as a corrupt competition. The Rooney red card was BS. The handball not called in front of Portugal's net was BS. The overtime whistle fiasco was BS. England by far had the better team.

Go Germany!

To go out on penalties is always a killer but at least 10 men held out til then without the 2 biggest stars. Well done to the boys.

PLEASE don't let Germany win. Anyone but Germany!

I don't hate Germany. In fact I love their beer and sausages. There's just rivalry like a Yankee -Red Sox thing.

Its possibly the same reason we think an Argentinian ref would be unfair....It's humour for us Brits. Bear with us.

Go Italy - I love pizza too!

SOParents,
Rooney, knowing that he was about to get a yellow card, was stupid for pushing the other team's player right in front of the ref... that's why he got a red card, instead of a yellow one. He should know better.

Nonetheless, I agree with you that England played a good game while being one player short. But England goalie is not as good as Ricardo.

Go Portugal!

(after Portugal, Go Italy!)

Lou,

As I've said before, Rooney is a gifted ball player, but he hasn't got the brains he was born with, and he's a thug....

I am now stuck.... i HATE Portugal for beating us and don't want them to win the world cup, but I hate the French even more...... who the heck do I support today????? There was discussion about yellow carding Ricardo after the fact as it was said that he led the ref into giving Rooney the red card.... they decided not to card Ricardo after looking into it.

It's giving me a headache - another reason to hate them both!!!!

I don't understand what Ricardo had to do with Rooney getting a red card. For what I remember, the whole thing happened somewhere mid-field...

I can understand you are frustrated your team is out, but why the hate? It is only a game afterall!
I would suggest you to go visit Portugal. It is a very welcoming country (where actually lots of Brits happily live!).

For the World Cup, you can always root for Italy!

Lou - take my words with a pinch of salt - my best friend is Portugueuse!!!!

I'm actually saddened the English team is out, but it came down to PK's and that, unfrortunately, was that.

I read about Ricardo, I will need to find the snippit and post it...

When I get over it, I will probably root for Italy or (gulp) Portugal, but it won't be the French!!

Fifa have announced they are to probe the red card given to Wayne Rooney during England's World Cup quarter-final against Portugal.

The striker was given his matching orders in the 62nd minute after an incident involving Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho and Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rooney was pulled up for a foul on Carvalho after placing his foot on the defender's groin.

However, Horacio Elizondo's decision to dismiss the player only seemed to come about when he pushed Ronaldo away after the winger ran up to the referee demanding sanction.

The world's governing body has said that the investigation will take place like in the aftermath of any straight red to determine the length of a ban.

"Wayne Rooney got a direct red card so he will automatically be suspended," a Fifa spokesperson said.

"It will be a disciplinary case and like any [dismissed] player the committee will decide on the penalty."

Ronaldo has also hit back at claims he tried to get Rooney sent off by badgering the referee.

The 20-year-old was caught by television cameras winking to the Portuguese bench in the aftermath of the incident, while he was also seen poking Rooney in the pit of his stomach prior to kick-off.

"The English press say the referee gave a red card because I spoke but this is not true," Ronaldo said.

"I said 'ref this is foul' but I did not say 'red card' because Wayne is my friend and I play at the same team."

Ronaldo scored the deciding penalty which put Portugal through to a semi-final clash with France on Wednesday.

Ok, now I understand what you were referring to - I did read about this too.
The funny thing is that the guy (actually kid, still), is always winking and smilling when Portugal is playing... either winning or loosing. And it's understandable how probably all of Portugal players were excited and winking away when Rooney and Beckham had to leave the game...

I'm taking all your comments with PLENTY of sea salt!
I like watching soccer and am excited that Portugal is still up there, but will be just fine and will continue watching the games (and eating Sardines on Ferry St) if/when Portugal looses...

I also know all of you "Engerlanders" are heart strong attached to your team so I have learned to let you be and don't take some a-bit-more-agressive-statements personal.

Cheers!
(and Yay to Soccer - way more exciting in my opinion, then baseball!)
