I have now registered the car and received the plates, temporary title, and insurance identification card. I now need to have the car inspected.

Where can I go locally that won't hit the wallet too badly or my time too much?

Going to the DMV inspection stations is free, except for the cost of the actual inspection sticker (around $5) -- but it could take awhile - I know Montclair is now an "appointment-only" inspection center. If your time is very valuable (i.e. you don't want to sit in an inspection line, or drive to Montclair), you'll likely pay $75-$100 for a private garage to inspect your car -- watch for coupons in the MoneyMailer or ValPak envelopes.

That number doesn't sound right to me (I would have sat on Montclair line if it was that high). I'm thinking it was less than $25. Call Bernie's Tire & Auto, 73 Millburn Ave, Millburn 763-4432 (he's a really nice guy who owned the Exxon Station in SO years ago) or Ridge Tire , 109 SO Ave, SO 762-0705

Went on a Saturday to Newark for my auto inspection. It was about a 10 minute drive from Maplewood. About an hour and a half wait for my inspection. No cost.
Called local gas stations for the price of inspection. The going rate is about $80.

I live in Maplewood, I always have my car inspected at the DMV on Roosevelt Ave in Jersey City. Door to Door , 20 minutes and not a long wait.

I used the Montclair station last year, and I was in and out in 20 minutes -- convenient and free. I took the first appointment of the day (that way I don't have to worry about their being backed up later in the day...)

I go to Westfield off of South Ave. It too is appt.-only but I believe they also have an arrangement for people with no appt.

Westfield is very good with available time slots. You can book online and they have appts starting as early as 6:30 am.
