I have now registered the car and received the plates, temporary title, and insurance identification card. I now need to have the car inspected. Where can I go locally that won't hit the wallet too badly or my time too much? |

Going to the DMV inspection stations is free, except for the cost of the actual inspection sticker (around $5) -- but it could take awhile - I know Montclair is now an "appointment-only" inspection center. If your time is very valuable (i.e. you don't want to sit in an inspection line, or drive to Montclair), you'll likely pay $75-$100 for a private garage to inspect your car -- watch for coupons in the MoneyMailer or ValPak envelopes. |

That number doesn't sound right to me (I would have sat on Montclair line if it was that high). I'm thinking it was less than $25. Call Bernie's Tire & Auto, 73 Millburn Ave, Millburn 763-4432 (he's a really nice guy who owned the Exxon Station in SO years ago) or Ridge Tire , 109 SO Ave, SO 762-0705 |

Went on a Saturday to Newark for my auto inspection. It was about a 10 minute drive from Maplewood. About an hour and a half wait for my inspection. No cost. Called local gas stations for the price of inspection. The going rate is about $80. |

I live in Maplewood, I always have my car inspected at the DMV on Roosevelt Ave in Jersey City. Door to Door , 20 minutes and not a long wait. |

I used the Montclair station last year, and I was in and out in 20 minutes -- convenient and free. I took the first appointment of the day (that way I don't have to worry about their being backed up later in the day...) |

I go to Westfield off of South Ave. It too is appt.-only but I believe they also have an arrangement for people with no appt. |

Westfield is very good with available time slots. You can book online and they have appts starting as early as 6:30 am. |
