Can anyone recommend a bakery in the vicinity for a 1st birthday cake? Only requirements are; tastes pretty good, cute/simple decorations and not too $$$. Thanks! |

How about an ice cream cake? The Village Ice Cream parlor Maplewood Ave (almost the last shop on that street going west) We had a real good experience with them

I had a HORRIBLE experience with picking up a cake at Costco last Saturday. It was for my daughter's 5th birthday. I had ordered the "Princess" design on Wednesday for pick-up Saturday morning. Got to the Costco bakery at about 11:00. The cake was not done and there were three people in front of me in the same boat. Bottom line is that I waited for more than a half an hour and they still had not started my cake. I had cart full of stuff and could not wait anymore. Fortunately, there was a generic cake in the case and I had not told my five-year old about the "Princess" cake ... That all being said, I would still recommend Costco for cakes, but would probably avoid holiday weekends ... |

I think Costco seems like a haul to go for a birthday cake. I would never think of driving to Rt. 22 the day of my kid's party to pick up a cake .... go to Sonny Amsters. Personally I like round cakes not sheet cakes and Sonny Amsters does great ones -- white cake with chocolate pudding between the layers! Yum! |

Actually, Costco is just a 10 minute drive, and you don't have to be on Rt. 22 at all if you go the back way via Morris Avenue. And i think their cakes taste great - much better than most bakeries, which are hit or miss. But to each his own. BTW - i usually get the whipped cream icing. =-) |

I am always satisfied w/ Costco's cakes for the taste, value and decoration. The carrot cake is good, not too sweet even with the buttercream icing. I also had a tricky pickup for this years' b-day cake (delayed opening due to computer failure, then the cake wasn't there) but they pulled through and did what I requested before I started to actually cry. I've spent triple at a former local establishment and the cake was barely edible. |

I would also recommend Costco's for a cake. I've always ordered them 2 days before and have gotten a fresh, beautifully decorated cake. Also for the price you can't go wrong. I wasn't thrilled with Sonny's. It was just ok. You could try Gencarelli's in Bloomfield on Broad Street. They are an excellent bakery. |
