(2003-07-10) -- Chicago Cubs manager Dusty Baker said he's concerned that U.S. President George Bush's pale skin pigment might cause problems for him during his current tour of African nations. Actually he suggested black and hispanic athletes have an easier time performing in hot weather than whites. Does this mean white players who feel they haven't seen enough action during the recent heat wave while playing for the Cubs in Chicago can sue? Stay tuned. What do the Reverands Al and Jesse have to say? |

Sure it's a story. It just shows that stupidity is not limited by skin color. Al Campanis was fired for comments that were not dramatically different. Of course we could all turn our attention to the next great Democratic Senator: Jerry Springer http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=536&ncid=536&e=10&u=/ap/20030710 /ap_on_el_se/springer_campaign_2 ---> Brought to you by Sbenois Engineering LLC <---- |

This is what Al Campanis said about African-Americans: quote:I truly believe that they may not have some of the necessities to be, let's say, a field manager, or perhaps a general manager.
If you want to check the quote, it's at this link. I think that's "dramatically different" from the relatively harmless comments of Dusty Baker. |

I remember the quote and the incident very well. But perhaps you ought to read ALL of Baker's comments before you determine that he wasn't a dunce. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=536&ncid=536&e=10&u=/ap/20030710 /ap_on_el_se/springer_campaign_2 If a white manager had said the very same things that Baker said, he would have been fired. ---> Brought to you by Sbenois Engineering LLC <---- |

I did read the comments. They were silly, but not insulting. Still a non-story. |

Amazing. If the shoe was on the other foot you'd be screaming racism. Jimmy the Greek got fired for silly comments too you know. |

Al Campanis in his infinite wisdom revealed to us that Blacks are incapable of operating in managerial positions in sports. No comment necessary. In essence Jimmy the Greek commented that Slave Masters breeded super slaves by mating the stronger ones with each other which is why Blacks today are superior in sporting events. It is debatable whether or not he should have been fired for his comments. I believe that he was fired because he globally insulted all Black atheletes who endured rigorous training and preparation to become successful in their chosen fields in professional sports. By saying Blacks were breed this way suggests that no training is necessary - It's the way they were intended to perform. Dusty Baker said that Blacks don't suffer from the extreme effects of the sun due to the dark pigmentation of their skin. Whether or not Dusty's so called scientific expertise is accurate in this case is irrelevant. His comment only states his idea that the darkness of skin offers protection against heatstroke and other harmful effects from the sun. I have also heard that Blacks acquire Skin Cancer at an extremely low rate in comparison to Whites due to this pigmentation. As Nohero said -- It's a non-story. |

Of course the hot, sunny climate is why Mother Nature gave Africans dark skin in the first place, to give them added protection against burns and such. It's not racist to say that; it's science. Whether this causes black ballplayers to feel less uncomfortable in hot conditions I don't know. |
