MY 7 YEAR-OLD SON CAME HOME WITH A SMELLY FIDDLER CRAB THAT HE GOT FROM HIS BIOLOGY CLASS HE TOOK AT THE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM AT THE SOUTH ORANGE MIDDLE SCHOOL. THIS LITTLE HARD TO CARE FOR CRAB WAS SENT HOME WITHOUT ANY PERMISSION IN A PLASTIC AIR TIGHT CONTAINER. SHOULDN'T IT THE POLICY OF THESE PROGRAMS TO GET PERMISSION TO SEND HOME LIVE CREATURES. MOST OF THE POOR LITTLE CRABS ARE GOING TO DIE! THEY REQUIRE A TANK AND SPECIAL CARE. THEY DON'T LIVE ALONE VERY LONG AND NEED MATES. IT JUST SEEMS 1) CRUEL TO DO THE THE CRABS AND 2) UNFAIR FOR WE PARENTS THAT DIDN'T WANT THE CRABS IN THE FIRST PLACE. MY SON IS IN LOVE WITH HIS CRAB AND NOW I'M SEARCHING OUT OTHER PARENTS THAT WOULD LIKE TO UNLOAD THEIR CRAB...WE'LL TAKE IT. WE'LL GIVE IT SPECIAL CARE. WE ALSO GOT CRICKETS--BUT THEY ARE NOW FREE ON THE LAWN.

We received 2 crabs. One has already died, if you would like to give our remaining crab a home we would be very happy. I don't know how to care for it and feel that it probably doesn't have much time left.

Oh The response I'm getting about these crabs is amazing! I'm furious with this teacher who sent home creatures with the students and no instruction on how to care for them. The water in that sand turns rancid very quickly--as those of you with these containers already know. I have set up a tank that mimics the crab's natural environment, and mixed up special salt water for them. Believe it or not, the live crab may eat the shell of the dead crab to get much needed calcium. Still--I'm happy to take you crab! Sadly to say--one recently adopted crab died within hours of coming to live with us. Our original crab however has just molted which I read was a sign of a healthy happy crab! |
