If anybody has used Odds & Ends for handyman work, I'd appreciate hearing about your experience and how to get in touch with them. Likewise, anyone who has had experience with ServiceMagic, I'd like to know if you were satisfied. I'm looking to restore a wooden playhouse/garden shed. If anyone reading this would like the job, send me a PM. Thanks! |

Never used Odds & Ends. I did discover ServiceMagic a while back when we were looking for someone to do specific carpentry work in conjunction with our roof replacement, and i wanted to get a carpenter's estimate to compare with what roofers were quoting. Unfortunately, all SM gave me were more roofer referals. That said, the 2 referrals they gave me both contacted me by phone and email pretty promptly to schedule a time to come by, which impressed me. I had nothing to lose, so i set up time with both. The first gentleman called to cancel 10 minutes before our meeting (after i'd taken an early train home), and never showed up for the rescheduled time. We tried calling him, beeping him, and leaving multiple messages with his answering service saying we're starving and want to go to dinner if he's not coming. We never ever heard back from him, even though i'm sure he must've eventually received our messages. Unfortunately, SM doesn't allow you to leave feedback for vendors if you didn't actually do work with them (although venting here feels pretty good). It didn't work out for us, but i do think the service is a good place to start when you need a contractor and have no other logical place to go for a recommendation. |

Thanks, papayagirl. I just got an e-mail through the service from a company called "Handy Contracting" owned by Clifford McCarthy, who included his favorable reviews from Summit and Montclair, and other places nearby. Please let me know if he was responsible for one of the no-shows you experienced. Otherwise, I plan to call him to see if he'll take this job. |

Nope, i believe the roofer who flaked was named Edward Humphrey. Good luck! |
