My wife and two daughters (11 and 6)and I are now, quite tardily, planning our vacation for the last two weeks of August. We don't want to do a lot of driving, and we'd like to be near water. A lake is as fine as a beach. North is better than south. If people have ideas and suggestions, they'd be welcome. Rhode Island? Maine? Adirondacks? Family resorts / hotels? Canada?
Thanks for all advice.

We go to Lapland Lake in the Adirondacks...pretty simple but tasteful cabins. You walk through a forest trail to get to the lake. Kayaks, rowboats and swimming. No motorized watersports. They have a website. It is a very low key place.

We just spent a wonderful week in the Finger Lakes, 4 to 4.5 hour drive. We rented a house on Seneca Lake through www.rentalplus.com.

Things to do include, swimming, boating, biking, antiquing, winery tours, historic sites (we had a great day in Seneca Falls), hiking in glens and splashing in waterfalls.

We'll be going back.

The Adirondack mountains are a true gem. My family used to go camping there every summer, and then did a few summers of renting cabins on Sheltered Lakes up there(I wouldn't recommend Sheltered Lakes necessarily, but it was a big step up from sleeping in tents and lean-to's, so at the time for us it was luxury). I was there at both of your daughter's ages and I can tell you that my summers up there gave me some of the best family memories. The Adirondacks are so well preserved and offer so many opportunities to do different things -- Hiking, canoeing, kayaking (we used to take a week long canoeing trip and just find our way to Lean-tos along the way and camp for the night). Indian Lake, Raquette Lake....wherever you go, it will be sure to be beautiful.

They have a great webside to help plan the trip

Jonathan,
the number for Lapland Lake 518 863 4974 and email vacation@laplandlake.com
Lapland Lake is located in Northville, NY..it is about a 4 hour drive. Lapland Lake is small scale, people often return year after year. Our older daughter is about to turn 7 and she absolutely loves it. Swimming in the lake, searching for salamanders, hiking through the forest. They have very clearly marked trails (it is a fabulous cross country ski resort in the winter). I think there are about 10-12 tupas (cabins). Good place for biking, hiking, just relaxing and reading by the lake. Please privateline me if you would like more information.

Block Island, Rhode Island

It is beautiful and quiet and there's enuf to do. (I know that sounds antithetical.)

Ferry from New London,CT takes cars if you make a reservation. Or you can leave your car on the mainland and just stow your luggage and your bikes on board.

Or you can fly.

Elizabeth -- that's where my "people" are from! I grew up on Rt. 1A on the border between Hamilton and Ipswich. Hmmmm, fried clams at Woodmans. Tom Shea's for a nice meal. Whale watches. Newburyport is a neat town too. Polo every Sunday at 3:00 at Myopia. Great beaches.

Here's a wonderful B&B near the finger lakes that I've stayed in twice:

Also check out Lake George or, if you want a longer ride and a bigger lake, Lake Champlain.

We visit the Thousand Islands every year which is quite wonderful too. Fishing, boating and historic buildings (it was sort of the Hamptons of the 1920s).

Jonathan,

I recommend Lake Wallenpaupack in the Poconos. A beautiful lake, nature trails, camping, fishing, swimming, etc. You are a few miles away from Promise Land State Park which has amazing hiking as well as its own smaller lake with swimming, etc. I believe the park has biking trails too. I know you can rent boats at Wallenpaupack and there are some decent dining options as well. Best of all, it is a mere two hour drive from South Orange/Maplewood.

If you are interested, I would recommend a little place called Loch Highlands, where you can rent a two bedroom cottage by the week. We stayed there about 5 years ago and were so enamored that we ended up buying a small cabin in the area that we frequent almost every weekend in the summertime. At the time we were there, Loch Highlands also rented a small boat with an outboard motor for tooling around the lake at a very reasonable price. As I recall, the cottage rental was pretty reasonable too.

There are islands in the middle of the lake where you can have picnics, barbeques, or just explore. I believe L.H. also had its own beach and swim dock. The whole area is a great place for kids.

Anyway, if you'd like more info, there is plenty on the web or feel free to contact me directly.

The beach rental market is soft this year, and there are many homeowners anxious for your business. If you enjoy the beach, you might call a few realtors to hear what's available.

A few years back, we were able to get a great place for 40% less than their normal weekly rental price.
