Add Peter Lemongello to the Cringe list. Anybody remeber him?. Sold thousands of records thru T.V. ad's then dissapeared. He was spectacularly dreadful.

Here's a good top-ten worst songs. This guy has a lot of time on his hands and seems to have spent it listening to horrible, horrible songs over and over again to be sure he caught them all. I sort of disagree with him putting "Black Water" at only 126, and I'm dismayed at how little attention he pays to Billy Joel, but still you can't argue that these all bite.

The Worst Songs of All-Time

1. Yummy, Yummy, Yummy (I've Got Love in My Tummy)
Ohio Express

2. In the Year 2525
Zager & Evans

3. Muskrat Love
Captain & Tennille

4. Do It To Me One More Time
Captain & Tennille

5. Honey
Bobby Goldsboro

6. See The Little Clown Laugh
Bobby Goldsboro

7. Watching Scotty Grow
Bobby Goldsboro

8. Escape (The Pina Colada Song)
Rupert Holmes

9. Afternoon Delight
Starland Vocal Band

10. Girl, You're A Woman Now
Gary Puckett & The Union Gap

more here.

Straw,

Is it a coincidence that the title of the new Zep live CD is

How the West Was Won?

P.S. I think most people would agree with you that Guns and Roses were better than the Beatles.

I DON'T THINK SO

I'm a trumpet player, and when I'm not sitting in with M/SO's leading cover bands I play in a number of symphony orchestras. As a brass player, I'm rather fond of stuff that lets us really air it out. While it's pretty easy to go to a rock concert where they "turn it up to 11," there's nothing like the sound of musicians playing really loud without benefit of electronics.

Top 10 Really Loud Pieces of Music
10. Tchaikovsky 6th Symphony. (The third movement has a dynamic "fffff" (that's 5 of them))
9. Messiaen, Et Expecto Resurrectionem Mortuorum
8. Mussorgsky/Ravel, Pictures at an Exhibition
7. Bruckner 7th
6. Respighi, Pines of Rome
5. Shostakovich 7th
4. Mahler 2nd
3. Verdi Requiem
2. Mahler 8th. (Just when you think it can't get any louder, he's got a brass choir stashed up in the balcony.)
1. Berlioz Requiem. (The all time champ, calls for 500 singers, 20-some kettle drums, two dozen brass players.)

I'll agree with the Berlioz Requiem as number one but no mention of Beethoven's 9th?! What, you never saw A Clockwork Orange? And how about Holst, The Planets? Sheesh.

And what about the 1812 Overture? What's louder than cannons?

I'm so happy to read that there are other aficionados out there, thanks! I personally don't think Beethoven 9 is all that loud, but The Planets is right up there, so cross off Tchaik 6.

A story about the 1812 Overture: One summer while at college, early in the morning, there were these tremendous blasts in the quad. Some windows facing it even blew out. We discovered that they were firing an actual cannon out there. Turns out, Telarc was making the first digital recording of 1812, and they were recording them to mix in.

The only time I ever played it was indoors, so we used a bass drum instead. We also didn't have a church carillon handy!

What about the Saint-Saëns organ concerto!? It's an audiophile's dream as a test piece for a sound system.
