Folks, just a reminder all those wishing for more "ethnic" restaurants. The last time I checked, Verjus is a French restaurant, which makes it an "ethnic" restaurant. Ethnicity doesn't only apply to non-European cultures. (Sorry, a pet peeve of mine.)

I live half way between the village and SA, but I shop at SA more often. Things are cheaper on SA for many things. For instance, Young's Fish Market charges about 1/2 to 2/3 of what Freeman's charges for many basic seafood items like flounder fillets, salmon steaks, Tiger shrimp, etc. But the main reason I prefer SA is less crowd, less crowdn and less crowd.

I'd love to see a good, reasonably-priced Thai restaurant on SA. And a good wine shop (like The Wine Library in Millburn). And definitely a hardware store so that I'll never have to set foot in Home Despot again.

We use the Rite Aid, Dunkin Donuts, Denco, all three liquor stores (maybe there are more, but I can only picture three in my head), the Fleet Bank, DiPietro's, Quik Chek, Ricciardi's, and that's about it. Oh yeah, and the world's worst Burger King that I will never go to again....(sorry, I just hate that place).

I want to try Panda Kitchen, b/c I've heard good things about it on here, and I'm really anxious to try Coney Island Dogs, but I tend to stay away from hot dogs. Stupid waistline...

Oh, and since I've read so many good things on MOL, I'm going to make sure we get to Verjus.

Our dogs go to Puppy Love.
Our car goes to Maplewood Tire.
We also go to Burger King, Sky's Book Store, the Sage Diner.
Weltman comes to us.
And we dearly miss Gary's and Maplecrest Hardware.

Use now: The bank, photo developer, Maple Chek, Mr. Gus drycleaning, Ricciardi for paint 'n stuff, Pizza Primo when we're in the mood for takeout pizza, Maplewood Tire, Dunkin Donuts if I'm starting the day on the road and need coffee for the journey, the Ford dealer for service checks, wine store, Rite Aid, and some nice dinners at Verjus. When we lived closer, used the Hilton Library, and made the occasional Burger King run.

Need to use more: DiPietro's, more dinners at Verjus.

Miss: the Hardware store. Enjoyed the old French restaurant. As for Gary's, well, that never did anything for us.

As for some of the other comments (well, not Strawberry's): I think Springfield Ave. is more of a "drive to a particular store" area, because it is spread out. It's much longer than the commercial stretch of Maplewood Ave. Hopefully, some of the work going on now, will change that.

(Oh, and thanks, Bobk, for starting this thread.)

Many lament Maplecrest Hardware - doesn't any remember Blanken's Hardware? The hobby shop and lawnmower occupies the site now. We supported two good hardware stores on SA for many moons before Home Depot.
I miss the 5&10 that used to be where the former M&M carpets was. Now it's yet another beauty supply place.
My kids used to get such a thrill by going to the toy store to select a toy with their very own money! Try letting your kids do that at a ToysRus!
My vote goes for a Trader Joe's - the one in Westfield is terrific and yet quite small as supermarkets go.
I hate driving miles to find a crafts store.

I'm out here... trust me, I'm always out here Nlanzieri!

FYI, I'm still working on plans for the "Ring of Fire", so I though I'd just let all you youngster's have some fun for a while!

Can anyone remember what store was located where Le Jardine was? Hint, the name began with a M.

For the "lives near the village" perspective: Trader Joe's would definitely get me and mine there more. About the only thing I go for now is Dunkin Donuts, Jay's Grille (Vauxhall), and occasionally Sherwin Williams.

Other things that would get me there more (thinking of things we go out of town for):
Kid Hairdresser
Barbeque
Hardware Store
Good toy store (imaginarium, discovery, zany brainy)
One dollar store
Thai
Game store - board games for me (nearest one is 20 miles away and not a good one outside NYC), computer games for the nephews and nieces, comic books - OK I know this is a personal niche but it WOULD bring in folks from the surrounding towns.
Car Wash
Chocolate Shop
Casual clothes
Kid's clothes
Shoes
Indoor Play Space (like Discovery Zone)
Cookware
Music Store
Radio Shack
Eyeglass chain (e.g. Lenscrafter)
Indoor pool (another good reason to cover the pool)
Outdoor furniture/swingsets
Unfinished wood furniture
Chase or Citibank
Pier One
Sporting Goods

Proposals from above I wouldn't use (because they're in the village already):
Wine store - village and Millburn Mall are fine
Book store - unless a much bigger one
Newspaper store

We live right near Springfield and use the following:

One hour photo place
DiPietros
Church's
Liquor store (don't know the name)
sometimes Rite Aid
Have been to Verjus once - we don't eat out in restaurants often. More take out (healthy kind) would be welcome!

When Le Jardin had the little cafe in front, I went a bunch of times. Half of those times, the door was open but the owner wasn't around. Someone from the kitchen would have to hunt him down to take my money. Had a feeling the place wouldn't last!

We've been to the Maplewood Deli a couple of times - for sandwiches or to pick up drinks to take to Maplecrest Park.

Dunkin Donuts for coffee on the way to the shore.

The new Soups and Scoops - I've been once and found ice cream just so-so. But I've heard great things about the soup.

Young Crab has always turned me off, don't know why - but maybe now we'll give it a try.

Phil, the avenue is going to have a BBQ real soon, there is a toy/game store (Maplewood Hobby Shop - across from the Sage diner), there is a Car Wash (Robert's - very good and cheap, in the back of a gas station - I think it's a Sunoco, as you go towards Irvington but still in Maplewood). I can't help you with the rest.

I remember Blankens! I dont think it was always there, but in later years he had a wood fire on pretty much all winter.

Gary's is gone? Does this mean the Winolear old-folks crowd officially have no place to go? In the 20 years I lived in Maplewood, we never went to Gary's. My mother was a waitress there in the 60's and that was reason enough for us to never go there.

Star Tavern in Orange NJ, patrons for 35 years. There was one waitress we had for several decades. She was awesome.
