Try Virtue Tile in Summit - it's on Broad Street, on the left, well before the business district. They have a great selection of beautiful tile. And, unlike Expo, the salesperson will be helpful and knowledgeable. What a concept!

Short Hills tile and marble over by the big Kings.

Also, look at Jayson's or some name close to that on Rt. 22.

Check out Danny at Standard Tile on Rt 46 in Wayne. He helped us with our bathroom & kitchen, he's very nice to work with. They're near BOB's and the Apollo card store. They had everything in stock too.

I shopped lots of tile stores and ended up at Virtue Tile in Summit. If your contractor OK's it, they'll give you 20% off the stated price, and their selection and service is definitely superior to other stores. Also, they do custom work there, so if you're looking for something distinctive, or even just a few distinctive accents in otherwise "normal" tile scheme, they are very artistic and have great ideas.

Ask for Katie. I will definitely be going back there for all future tile needs.

ps - one warning, when shopping tile prices, ask about freight costs up front. for some companies, it's a flat $35. for one company we paid about $500 just for freight. our freight alone between the two companies we ordered from (both west coast) was nearly $1000. just ask upfront so you are prepared.

I liked Katie at Virtue Tile, too. She didn't hover, gave opinions and information when asked, and she's very knowledgeable.

Anyone used International Tile Gallery in SO (on Valley)?

Just over a year ago I needed a very unusual material for a tile project I was doing myself. They went out of their way to help me get it (and in a hurry).

Otherwise -- no experience with them.

Virtual Tile's hours are no good for me. I work during the week and am generally not available on weekends.

I used Kennedy Tile when I lived in Hoboken - don't get to that neck of the woods often. Nor do I get to Wayne much.

So, I'm on my way to Jasco, (open 'til 9!) and if that doesn't work, will look at SH Tile and Union, as I'll be in Union Friday.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

We used International Tile to do some work in our house and they were awful. Not evil, just incompetent. Sebd me a private mail in the (unlikely) event that you need to know more.

1-2Many,

What did you mean by "If your contractor OK's it, they'll give you 20% off the stated price"?

Why would what your contractor says have anything to do with the price of tile you were buying yourself?

The answer may be obvious, if so, forgive my ignorance. ;-D

Many thanks,

Be well, all.

I think that suppliers develop relationships with contractors, whereby the supplier will offer a discount, whether paid by the contractor or directly by the consumer, if the contractor regularly brings business to the supplier. The idea, of course, is to encourage repeat business from contractors who will be able to keep the total cost somewhat lower for their customers. We renovated a bathroom while living in NYC and got a discount from the tile store, because we went with the contractor to select tiles and he always takes people there. He later told us of two stores where we could go own on our own (as in, at our convenience) to choose towel bars and a medicine cabinet, and that we would get a discount simply by mentioning his name. It turned out that we had already purchased towel bars and a couple other items at one of these stores without getting the discount. So, it's not so much about a contractor OKing an order as it is about the contractor having a relationship with the supplier. Of course, the supplier might insist on receiving the order directly from the contractor, which would be signing off on the order.

Standard Tile is also on route 10 in a little strip mall just past, um i think Bob's or perhapps it's a furniture store. Well, it is beyond the ToysRUs but before the FUnplex and Sports Authority.

THey have a very good selection from regular tiles to european/interesting tiles.

Jab is on the money.

For example, if you were looking to buy Pella doors or windows, and if you have me order them, you would get my discount.

I am a Pella qualified installer and thus, get the discount rate due to the volume of orders I place with them.

The same is true with tile stores.
