Hi! I'm looking for... I'll be honest... mushroon soil. I don't know if New Jerseyans know what that is. It's the soil they grow mushrooms in way down south in Southern Pennsylvania. I finished building a huge planter box this morning for my wife and she would love to fill it with mushroom soil. We had a similar set-up back in Delaware where mushroom soil is easy to come by and absolutely anything we stuck in the ground grew to be healthy and huge. Anyways, I've been searching the internet all day looking for said soil and have come up empty. Can anyone suggest where I might find a supplier? ...and if not mushroom soil, then what comes close? Thanks for listening, Curt |

If you want Mushroom soil, find someone with a horse. Collect the droppings and compost them, then you have what you are looking for. |

Well, yeah... the horse factor is probably why there's so much more mushroom soil in Southern PA and Northern MD. Just seems curious to me that it's so hard to come by up here. Its only a 125 mile haul via I-95... |

George, What would you recommend instead of mushroom soil? Curt |

I've had good luck with what I guess you'd call it "Mapleleaf soil". In the fall I mound up a big bunch of leaves in an inconspicous place in the yard, let it steep for the winter and dig under the top layer in the spring and it's a beautiful thing - so many worms it looks like a snake farm. I mix it in with my garden and anything I plant takes off at warp speed. Good luck! |

I suspect "mushroom soil" is just a mix of top soil and compost (probably manure). I imagine a gardening book would have the proportions. |

Try Bartell's in Clark. We had a yard of really good compost from PA delivered to our house last fall. Reasonably priced. 732-388-1581. Good luck! |

Xavier67, I think thats the ticket. I spoke with someone at Bartell's and he said, "Sure, we've got mushroom soil, you want that straight or mixed with top soil?" However I'll have to get in touch with their "Bulk Yard" in Scotch Plains for delivery. 33$/yd2 Anyone else interested in the soil of the Gods... call Bartell's Bulk Yard at: 908-654-1566. and Thanks! You're kidding? They won't deliver to Maplewood anymore? Try Turf Grass in Millburn. They might have mushroom soil. |

Nope, I'm not kidding. They'll deliver as far away as Elizabeth, but not Maplewood. Go figure! Where is Turf Grass exactly? I've been out cruising around looking for it, but havent as yet stumbled across it. The guy at the Mill told me it was on Main St, but I'll be darned if I can find the place. Curt |

Algebra, Its not how many its what variety that counts. ;-) Curt Besides, I copped-out and went with the top-soil that Turf Grass sells to all the landscapers around here. Just got to be too much of a hassle. Probably cant grow a decent mushroom in the stuff I'm getting. Had a nice farmer to farmer chew with the guy at Turf Grass though... Curt |
