http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/news/2003/07/16/benitez_trade/ Benitez also is remembered in the Bronx for drilling Tino Martinez with a pitch in the back during a 1998 game at Yankee Stadium that sparked a benches-clearing incident. Then with the Baltimore Orioles, Benitez was retaliating after Bernie Williams hit a three-run homer. "Retaliating?" For what? Sucking? "Remembered" is an understatement. I hope the fans boo the hell out of him and heck, even throw things, forcing an end to the game. Every single time he's brought in. That ought to teach Steinbrenner & Cashman a lesson or two about ignoring the fans. I am disgusted by this trade. |

man, get ahold of yourself! you're advocating that fans act like violent idiots over an incident that happened 5 years ago? as if that was worse than Yankee hero Clemens drilling Piazza in the head? my prediction is that away from the bad vibes at Shea, he'll be a better pitcher than he's been for the Mets. and the first time he strikes out the side, fans will give him a big ovation. |

I admit I'm PO'd. Of course I'm not advocating violence, just a bit of "civil disobedience." I still don't think Clemens was trying to hit Piazza in the head. At the time, Clemens was fresh off the DL and struggling with his control. I don't think he could have aimed at anyone's head and hit it. I do think he was trying to brush Piazza back, which is part of the game, and the ball got away from him. The bat thing on the other hand, who knows.... |

you don't believe a guy who had pinpoint control the rest of that evening, just happened to have one pitch get away, and hit Piazza between the "N" and "Y" on his helmet? A guy who was hitting about .500 off Clemens, with a grand slam in his last at bat against him? denial, thy name is #9 Dream...

But here's the thing -- the Mets are in last place with no hope of winning their division or the wild card. This means that none of their games are "must-wins." How much pressure can he be under? I bet Tino is bowled over laughing in St. Louis. |

Hey, Benitez could be just the thing. He throws hard and won't have to face 9th inning pressure. And Cashman really should try to get Kenny Rogers back, too. |

The Yankee fans seemed to forget pretty damn quick that Rogers Clemens won almost 200 games in a Redsox uniform. I think they can handle having Benitez |

Clemens is a headcase..but he's a Hall of Fame headcase. Benitez is a headcase, but not a Hall of Fame headcase. But I suppose he'll fit in since he's already hated by Mets fans. I thought Jason Anderson had some promise and Benitez is a free agent at season's end...two more reasons I dont think its a great deal. |

So I guess that's the good news -- that we'll probably only have to tolerate his presence for three months or so. As for Clemens, people quickly forgot that he drilled a few Yankees in his Boston & Toronto days, including Jeter. When Clemens came to the Bronx, people worried (as they do today about Benitez) what the reaction in the clubhouse would be. Jeter took it upon himself to break the ice with a little levity. During the first intrasquad game in which he had to face Clemens, Jeter stepped up to the plate wearing all of Posada's catcher's gear, including the mask. Everyone had a good laugh. I agree with Hank's comments; this is more short-term thinking on Cashman's part. I just hope they don't trade that other prospect, Claussen, for some 38 year old reliever. |

I don't think this has anything to do with any kind of thinking on Cashman's part. This is a George move all the way. Usually when he traded promsing prospects for washed up players it was for washed up players who where once great, or at least good. |

This makes my Met season. If the Yankees win it all no one is surprised. If Benitez blows it we have something to crow about.

What will make for a fascinating Mets second half is their ongoing cashiering of name players. They'll be better for it, just as Seattle improved after unloading Randy Johnson, Junior Griffey and Alex Rodriguez. After all, the Mets could match their first half with cheap rookies and it'll be interesting to see the long list of AAAs they'll have around for years to come. Robert Little |

DISCLAIMER: I am a life-long Mets fan: Benitez will pitch much better in the Bronx (and he really was pretty darn good most of the time in Queens) because he'll be a lot more comfortable pitching in front of Yankee fans. The reason? Ninety percent of Mets fans are idiots. They come out to the ballpark waiting for the chance to boo (they're sort of like Philly fans in that respect). When Benitez would come into a game, if he threw the first pitch for a ball, the stirring in the stands would start. Ball 2 -- grumbling. Ball 3 -- complaints and catcalls. Ball 4 -- BOOOOOO!!!!!! To be fair, the team's 40+ years of (mostly) futility has caused much of this dysfunctional behavior. On the other hand, it can't be very productive for the home team. Among MLB players, Mets fans are known to be the most fickle. Go 3 for 4, and they'll boo that one strikeout. And before anyone says that for the amount of salary these guys collect, they should be able to put up with a little abuse, let me ask: Does anyone think that fan abuse makes players play BETTER, regardless of the money they're being paid? |

If any of you Mets fans are interested, I have four box seats (mezz. box sec. 4, row 512B, seats 1-4) for the Sunday, Aug. 3 game at Shea against the Cardinals. They include access to the Diamond Club and a pre-paid parking pass. Face value is $39 each, with the parking pass at $8. I can’t go. They’re available for a total of $100 and can be picked up in Maplewood Village. Private line me if you’re interested. Robert Little |

So far I've been totally wrong. Benitez is just as bad for the Yanks as he was for the Mets. Go figure -- the one guy the Yankee magic doesn't work for. |

27 games behind! Listen ML1 (AKA #6) ... I have been a fan MY WHOLE gawddamn LIFE, but this is EMBARASSING. The BREWERS are one win away from SWEEPING us ... I want you to get up right now, and go to the window, open it, and stick your head out, and yell: "I'm as mad as Hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!" Casey said it best, "The only thing worse than a Mets game is a Mets double header." |

Gary Carter really pulled them in last night...22,000 instead of 6,000 the previous night. I wonder if The Kid got a cut of the gate. Those Mets really know how to honor a player...honor a guy on a weeknight. Maybe a weekend date conflicted with Carter's hair appointment or tee time. Oh, and the Yankees may have added one headcase, but we at least got rid of one too, Raul Monde-seeya. |

I think he played third base on Monday night in the park...and if the Yankees ever did honor him, theyd draw more than 22,000! (By the way...Horace Clark was at Old Timers Day this year) |

Imagine how many people would have shown up for Gary Carter night if he actually went into the HOF as a MET! Now here's a thought ... If Carter went into the HOF as a Met, should the Mets retire his number? |

24,500 tops on a Tuesday night in late July if he's wearing a Mets cap during this pathetic season. Have it on a Saturday afternoon...at least 45,000 or more will show up when the Yankees honor Ron Guidry next month, because they do it right and it will be on a Saturday afternoon. |

I was never a Carter fan, in fact, most folks werent as big a Gary Carter fan as Gary Carter was. Not just anyone makes the Hall, and a team if they have any class and sense of history should commemorate that somehow, and it wasnt like he played a year and moved on. He did have good years at Shea, as opposed to say Roberto Alomar, who can conceivably make the Hall some day, but certainly not for what he did as a Met. Should the Red Sux somehow commemorate Roger Clemens? I think so...he had great years there..but will the bone-headed Beantowners go for it? Oh and this retiring numbers thing does get a little silly when current Tidewater pitcher, and former Yankee, Jason Alexander, had his number retired as the first member of the Single A Staten Island Yankees to make it to The Show. A week later, he was traded. |
