This is not a complaint, but rather a query. Did anyone hear long low rumbling noises last night, around 11:00 / 11:30? Like very extended thunder, or fireworks, or an ammunition plant blowing up in the distance? At first I thought it was ghosts moving furniture in my attic (well, I didn't really think that was the case, but that sure was what it sounded like), but when I woke my snoozing husband up he had me turn off our loud window fan and then we could tell the sounds were coming not from our house -- thank goodness -- but from outside, and probably not in the immediate area either. Please tell me someone else heard this too, and I'm not crazy . . . Thankey. |

It was the massive fireworks show held in mid-July in Berkely Heights. It is far beyond what any town puts on for July 4th. My understanding is that some major mob guy pays for it every year as a gift to keep the peace with local law enforcement. |

Not so Notehead, family in the fireworks biz lives in Berkley Heights , puts show on for the town, only town residents can get parking pass. It started @ 10.30pm last nite. It also draws a large amount of bikers , the only thing that the cops like about it , is the OT. |

And what was up with the horn honking for a half hour around 1:00am last nite? Sounded like it came from somewhere around South Orange Ave./Valley St. area, but could have been farther away, I suppose. |

Jet, really? That's very interesting, I think the story I heard has been very widely told. I'm almost disappointed to learn the truth. Hey, doesn't the mob control the fireworks business anyway - so it could still be sorta-kinda true? |

I'm glad you asked the question, Amandacat, because it was bugging me, too. I stood outside looking up at the sky, trying to figure out what was going on. Notehead - the story you heard was probably inspired by the old John Gotti fireworks in Queens. |

AmandaCat, I also thought that the noice was coming from my attic at first and finally concluded that it must be thunder. I didn't think about fireworks. |

Actually Notehead you are sorta-kinda right about the mob controlling fireworks in NJ , it is for as long as I can remember part of their product line around the 4th. As for the families in the fireworks biz , they go into politics , both in NJ & NY. |

I am so relieved you all heard it too! And that there was a reasonable explanation for it, aside from the ghosts-moving-furniture-in-the-attic theory. 11:30 on a Wednesday night seems a little late for a thunderous fireworks display to me, but I guess that just proves that I'm a cranky old lady . . . |

The fireworks display in Berkeley Heights is the culmination of a festival they hold in honor of a saint. (I forget wich one) It is actually a lot of fun. I highly recommend it! |

Yes that feast at Berkley Heights is great and the fireworks are awesome better then any other town. The best thing to do is take the rain in on $3.50 round trip. The Mount Carmel Society always holds th feast this time of year. There must of been 1,000 people there. So next year check it out it's worth going to. |

The show is put on by the Santore family who owns Garden State Fireworks. Even though their shop is in Millington and the show is in Berkeley Heights, it's considered their hometown show. The festival is for the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Society and the fireworks have taken place for 70 years or so. I am pretty sure that the Flood Hill fireworks were put on by Garden State Fireworks. I had gone to school with a Santore back in the day and always got to watch them set up the displays. I totally missed it this year!
