it is my understanding that an emergency meeting of the town council has been called for this coming Friday.I have been told that it by invitation only. 1.Is this legal? Shouldn't all of the public be able to attend if part of the public can? Is my info wrong and it is an open meeting? |

I heard the same thing. It is closed to the public. Very strange... |

I assume that they will come out of that meeting with a brilliant plan that won't require me to pay 50% more in taxes on the house I bought 4 months ago and that won't make people on the east side of town pay more than their share. |

Sounds like they've been taking lessons from the South Orange trustees! |

Dave....what about the people on the West side of town paying more than their share? I think we should say all Maplewoodians instead of East/West. |

Cfa: I'm on the West side and I'm seeing a potential rise in taxes of 50%. What I meant was that I don't want to shift the burden to the East side. In other words, what is grossly unfair to me (which it is) ought not become someone else's problem. There has to be a solution. |

Please do not take anything for granted and show up to the town meeting Tuesday Night at 8pm. The NY Times, The Star-Ledger and CBS will have press covering what is going to be a wild night. |

BAK Why the heavy news coverage? What will be so special about the meeting next Tuesday, whose agenda hasn't been put up yet? And what is the purpose of this Friday's meeting? Will the latter be televised like all the others? Rheims |

Friday's meeting is absolutely closed to the public. My friend called Liz Fritzen from Town Hall and asked why and isn't this in violation of the Sunshine law? Liz replied the meeting will consist of roll call, the required statements and close the meeting. Is anyone buying this? There will be a concocted "legal" reason why but it will be the same excuse given for the "raiding" of the pool funds, which was denied by our ex-mayor and found to be true. But then again, it was for pool related funds. And getting a copy of the budget for the town is meaningless, it gives no detailed information on anything. |

Friday's meeting at 8:30am is an executive session of the Township Committee to determine if Certified fulfilled its contract terms with the Township and if not, to determine whether litigation is a viable alternative. There is also an agenda item dealing with a personnel matter. State law permits legal and personnel topics to be discussed in a closed session. The public notification process for this meeting was the same as all of our meetings: a posting on the bulletin board in town hall and a legal notice in the NewsRecord. That notice will appear in Thursday's paper. On Tuesday, January 16th at 8pm, a regular meeting of the Township Committee will be held. It will be televised and there will be an opportunity for the public to address the Committee. |

At that meeting, Mr. De Luca, will you be able to justify a 79% increase in my taxes? It is beyond belief that a town can assume that its residents can afford increases like this. Did the Township Committee make an assumption that because a resident lives on the west side of town that they can automatically afford these types of increases? When we bought in Maplewood two years ago, we could afford our house - this may no longer be the case. If we knew that our taxes would increase like this, we never would have bought in Maplewood. The real kick in the shorts is that I truly love living in Maplewood. |

Please be kind to our township committee, they do not have a clue of what has happened here and they need to meet in closed session to try and figure out what Certified has done to us. they are not appraisers or Realtors, this has been as much of a shock to them as to us. Now lets see how they deal with it. P.S. if you happen to get on camera on Tuesday the 16th make sure you blast Certified Valuations for what they have done to the town of Maplewood. Other towns need to know what they are in store for. |
