We just had a sewer back up in our basement and were told that we have ancient sewer lines that should be replaced. However the price was really high, to us, using a "high tech" system where they shoot the new pipe in and don't have to dig up the front yard.

Has anyone ever done this? Companies out there? How necessary is it?

There are two other options. One is to have the line looked at, internally, with a drain line video camera. From there you can make an assessment as to what needs to be done to keep you in business. The other is to have the line jet-cleaned with a sewer jet machine.

The video camera can tell you if the line is back-pitched, broken, clogged, separated, old, new, full of tree roots or whatever.

The jet generally will not clear a completely clogged pipe but is excellent to revive a sewer line in poor condition.

I assume that whoever told you your lines were bad checked the sanitary sewer in the street at the time of your backup to ascertain that it was not caused by a blockage in the town's line in the street. Such blockages may occur at various locations intermittently. You can check with the Maplewood Dept. of Public Works to see if any problems occurred at the time of your backup, if need be.
