I saw 28 Days Later in Essex Green Sunday night, and what a nightmare that theater is - it was the late showing, but the theater was packed with kids and screaming babies and infants, and people talking loudly as if there wasn't a movie playing. Not only was it very late, but the movie was very scary and gory, way too much for even young teenagers. Unbelievable. Then I went to use the rest room and it was absolutely disgusting - there were dirty diapers and all kinds of sh*t on the floor, toilets, sinks, so needless to say I skipped the rest room. Anyone else have such a bad experience there? |

Mem, if you want to talk about disruptive kids, go the Union theater. I haven't had a problem yet at Essex Green, aside from their ticket pricing. |

We went as a family to Essex Green to see The Hulk a few weeks ago. Our experience was similar to Mem's. A large group of teenagers were talking loudly and cursing, getting up and moving around constantly (crossing in front of us as we had to pull our feet back). Finally, the ushers came and threw them out. One father had grabbed one of the obnoxious kids by his collar and chewed him out for the language he was using in front of the man's kids. The kid was cowed and apologized. Earlier the boy had been very brave about speaking out disrespectfully to people who asked them to quiet down. I was annoyed at the lack of courtesy and their seeming ignorance of how to behave in public. They were way more interested in entertaining each other than watching the movie (very teenagerish). I would bet that the management would respond to your complaints and have the offenders leave. I would certainly complain and let them know I want my $ back if that situation arose again. I'm glad someone spoke up. Because they did I'll be more likely to do it the next time. |

Mem, was it a weekend night? Whether or not, I feel your gross-out. I only see three or four movies per year and what the spouse and I usually do is "brunch and a movie". Key word being brunch (insert smiley face), and then attend the first showing, which is also more economical. AND, there's usually very few people in attendance, most of whom want to actually WATCH the movie. Now, the bonus: the bathrooms were relatively sanitary at that early stage in their business day. While I have not encountered the aforementioned abominable bathroom conditions at Essex Green, I have encountered a few at some restaurants. Maybe the power of MOL can alert the management or the owners or the ones pocketing the profit that perhaps the facilities need to be cleaned on an hourly basis. Just my 2 cents. Definately not in Kansas anymore. |

Mem - I had the same experience at Essex for "28 Days" - cellphones ringing, lots of really young children running up and down the aisles, Folks sitting down and loudly catching up with their friends an hour into the show. It's NOT a kid's movie by a long shot but I'd say a third of the audience was under 10 years old. BTW - did you like the movie? (I loved it) I wish the ending had been different, but I hear there's another version out with an alternate ending. |

Too many people think they're still sitting in their living room while watching a movie at a theater. Good parenting is a rarity. |

I never go to the movies in the suburbs. I usually head to the city where you tend to find less kids and less chatter. |

I've had the same experience of noisy audiences at Essex Green, and it's happened frequently enough that I hesitate to go there. It's not just kids who talk and wander during the movie. There are lots of adults who carry on a sort of running commentary about the story as it progresses, and it drives me crazy. It's not just Essex Green, though. We were at a Montclair theater, and people chatted through the coming attractions and the opening credits until someone shushed them. When the lights go down, I want it to be quiet, but most movie audiences do seem to act as if they're in their living room, not a public place. Maybe it's those freakin' commercials that make them feel like they're at home?? |

I guess living where we do, we should be lucky they're not shooting at the screen. There is no guarantee that seeing a film in Manhattan will insure a quality viewing experience. The Ziegfeld Theater has a chronic problem of vibration from the subway below shaking your seat. |

My wife and I have had problems seeing afternoon movies, which are popular with senior citizens. We always wind up sitting behind an elderly couple, one who is hard of hearing. If they're not constantly asking, "What'd he says?" they're explaining the plot or stating the obvious. During a particularly quiet and introspective scene in one movie, we heard an older woman say out loud, "He's thinking." But hey, one day that'll be me.... |

thegoodsgt: ROFL! Thanks for the laugh!! I have never had that problem w/Essex Green--in fact I love that place because the screens are big, sound is good and it's never crowded when I go. We either go during the day (when we can--which is awesome), or else to the early evening show (7pm-ish). Seems like the really obnoxious people come out later. I find the 7pm show is a good one in general--we saw Pirates of the Caribbean (full disclosure: I LOVED it!) in Union right after it opened at 7pm, and it was relatively empty.

Ooh, I wish we'd gone to see Pirates of the Caribbean there! We saw it in Maplewood, and the bulb they use for projection is so dim that the whole film looked muddy. (I liked it anyway - Johnny Depp rules!) |

The Maplewood theater is the pits. We went there exactly once, to see "Life is Beautiful." The projection was so bad that we left after 10 minutes and asked for our money back (we got it). Friends have reported seeing rats scooting up and down the aisles there. When I strike it rich one of the first things I will do is put a private theater in my house. I also always seem to end up right behind (or in front of) a couple who can't keep their yaps shut. |

Cutter, I thought the movie was good, but it certainly wasn't for kids and babies. Also, I don't know why people spend all this money to see a movie and ignore it. I felt like I was at some kind of late Sunday night celebration or something. |

I guess taking babies and kids to a movie is cheaper than paying a sitter. That is the issue at Essex Green. |

Lumpyhead got it exactly right. Parents don't want to pay a sitter, and their kids probably want to see the movie anyway. I am amazed how many young kids I see at late movies - those kids should definitely be in bed already. There is no excuse for making noise during a movie, and I think it's really poor parenting to expose a young child to the likes of 28 Days. |

A second for Loews Mountainside--same crowd but exponentially better behavior, IMHO. |
