I am looking to replace some windows in my home and John @ Tru-Therm was recommended to me. Can anyone out there support this recommendation? Any other reliable contractors for window repalcement that you know of? Thanks! |

We have replaced all of the windows in our house with Tru-Thermal windows. We are extremely happy with them--and the service is great. John is very careful and thorough, as are his employees. We recommend them without reservation. |

I agree. Good guy and his installer is amazing. We had two minor problems with windows after a while and they fixed them promptly. |

Alindsay-- you could also hire a general contractor to install replacement windows. He could choose windows of any price and material, not only vinyl as many of these companies do recently. If your house is nice and 30's or 20's-ish I hope you'd consider wood as the right way to go, and not the bizarrely cheap vinyl ones. They can really take away from the look of some houses.

True Thermal windows are far from cheap. They are quality windows, and, what's more, unlike the old wooden ones of which you seem so enamored, they work. |

Can vinyl siding be far behind? |

Lizziecat, New wooden ones work very well, as do old wooden ones well maintained and fixed. I apologize I know nothing about "true thermal" but know that 90% of the new windows I see in town are the ones so popular in down-market speculative developments nationwide in every way inferior to Maplewood. I saw a yard sign with the text reading:"159.99$ a window" where vinyl windows were going in. This is honestly too cheap a product to put in most of the houses in Maplewood, I know that sounds elitist, but our architecture is getting slowly degraded. It really is. |

Virgilian, We are interested in replacing our windows with new wooden sashes. Can you recommend a contractor for this? Do you have any suggestions as to which manufacturer to go with? Also, do you know if any manufacters make wooden screens to go with the windows? We'd prefer not to have aluminum screens on the outside. |

Joan, In another posting in "soapbox" on windows C& P Black are mentioned, I hear good things about them. Pine windows-Marvin, Lincoln, Norwood, Kolbe & Kolbe, and there is another manufacturer locally in Newark who make custom traditional sash--will look for their name, address. Mahogany windows-Kolbe & Kolbe has a new mahogany window, many other companies have them too and they get pricey. I know Marvin makes wood screens and storms; some of the others above may also. I'm sure the Newark outfit does.
