Go see it! It's really, really, really, really great. A big fat American movie that looks good, sounds good, and makes you feel good. And yet, it's not maudlin! Best actor for 2003? The thirty-plus horses who played Sea Biscuit. Lord, to see them run. But here's the miracle: the humans in it are just as good!! And the cinematographer. The art director. Just everybody. Everybody rises to the occasion of a great story and a great script.

The Hameltonian is next weekend at the meadowlands. Beleave it or not it really is a family thing to do. There's bands and rides, plus horse racing. The horses are Trotters and Pacers, not runners. But that's NJ racing.

Why is NJ racing all trotters and pacers? Runners seem to get all the glory, why isn't all racing with runners?

Believe it or not the runners appear too elite for the betters in NJ. They used to split the season 6 months standardbreads (trotters / pacers) six months runners. But no one bet on the runners. So NJ closed Garden Stated Park (Mount Holly?). And turned the Meadowlands to Trotters and Pacers. Plus NJ is the top place for standardbreads in the world. Add to that the Triple Crown for runners goes for 1.5 mil, yesterday there was 1.5 mil in purses at the meadowlands and no one even knew about it. There’s MUCH more money in the Trotters and Pacers.
Understandably I’m bias, been racing horses from the age of 5, well my dad actually.

I forgot to add that a good runner will cost 200G+ a good Pacers cost about 40G. So it’s much more attainable.

"It's really, really, really, really great."

We loved it! I think horse racing will experience a come back in popularity as a result of this movie. A must see!

NJ has thoroughbreds at Monmouth Park. Next weekend is the $1,000,000 Haskell. Funny Cide will be there and its always a good time down at Monmouth.

I saw the movie last night. It was good, but, as usual, the book was better.

I agree, Mem. I finished the book on Thursday, went to see the movie on Friday. It was good, but didn't move me like the book. And I didn't expect it to, but much was cut from the movie that I felt should have been there. To really get to know Seabiscuit, you must read the book--God I love that horse!

Maybe a silly question, but is it a family viewing movie. My kids want to see it, but have read some reviews that make some "strong" comments about it's sensuality?

No horse jokes please!

I think the rating is PG-13. The only sensual scenes were brief and involved hookers and jockeys. I don't recall any nudity or overt sex--just jolly jockeys and happy hookers enjoying one anothers' company after a good race. I think it's fine for 10 and up--great racing scenes.
