I have two kids who turn 6 and 4 in September and I'd like to send them to day camp this summer, preferably somewhere in Maplewood or close to it. Can anyone recommend some good camp programs? Thanks! |

The YMCA here in Maplewood has a very popular day camp. |

Prospect Co-op Pre-school has a camp for children up to kindergarten age. It runs 9am-12, for approx. 8 weeks (4 days during weeks in June & August and 5 days for the weeks in July. It is generally closed one week in July when the church runs a bible school-- totally non-related to the camp.) The cost is approx $450(+ or -) per child. It is not run as a co-op. (Meaning, you have no time responsibilties.) They also have an extended lunch program. For more info contact Peggy Tobin at Prospect Co-op. It is open to the public if there are spots available (that co-op children do not use). There are 55 or so kids in the camp. |

Tip: as for girl scout camps: my daughter, now 12, has enjoyed both the Oval (day camp) and Camp Hoover in Sussex County (sleep over.) This year she will attend, for the 2nd year, a Quaker farm camp in the Poconos, which is unique and great. Anyone who wants more info: mail me at mck@grapevine2.com. |

I am a Maplewood resident and day camp director for the South Mountain YMCA in Maplewood. I believe that we can provide a nice local day camp experience for your children this summer. I would be happy to talk to you about our camps. You can call me at 762-4145 X17 or you can e-mail me at dberry@metroymcas.org. We also have a day camp open house coming up at the YMCA on Sunday March 4 from 1:00-3:00pm. |

You can get a camp brochure for the local council (Girl Scout Council of Greater Essex and Hudson Counties) camps by calling the council office in Montclair at 746-8200. They have the Oval Daycamp in the South Mountain Reservation (within the Maplewood town boundaries) and also Eagle Island - a sleepaway camp on an island in Upper Saranac Lake in upstate New York. For information about Camp Hoover, a sleepaway Girl Scout camp in New Jersey, contact the Washington Rock Girl Scout Council. Their council office is in Westfield and the phone number is (908)232-3236. There are other Girl Scout camps in New Jersey and you might be able to get information about them from the Montclair or Westfield offices also, but I'm not sure. The minimum age for the Oval is 6 (by July 1). The sleepaway camps have programs for children beginning at age 7 or 8. My daughter has attended all three camps mentioned above and has enjoyed them all. She plans to return this year and her younger sister will probably attend the Oval for the first time. |

Thanks mck and sac. Is there transportation available to the oval? I sent away for the booklet but didn't get it yet. My daughter is 8 years old and a brownie. I think she would enjoy this camp and I have only heard good things. Can you add any good things from your own personal experiences? Do they stay at the oval all day or do they go other places? I have stayed in one of those beautiful cabins (LOL) and it was quite an experience. Have you had the pleasure? My daughter loved it though! |

Yes there is transportation for The Oval, but not door-to-door. There are one or two bus stops in each town. In Maplewood, the stop is next to the Hilton Library. South Orange has two on South Orange Avenue, one at Wyoming Avenue (South Mountain School?) and one at Scotland Road. In our experience the bus schedule varied quite a bit, at least early in the session, which was somewhat aggravating, but then it settled down and was OK. It has been a couple of years since our older daughter went to daycamp at the Oval and they have changed the program a bit, but I think that they go to another location such as a Y (?) to swim several times a week and some of the special interest programs involve offsite activities. I have heard that the response to requests for the brochure has been slow this year. If you still don't have one, email me at sac07040@yahoo.com and we can work out some way for you to get a copy of mine. |

I have another question regarding the Maplewood Camp. Is there any transportation for that or are we on our own with that one? I have two children that would probably need to be picked up at 1:30 (I believe that is the time camp lets out) Anyone? |

Tip - There is no provision for transportation for Kids Kamp, the name of the Maplewood town camp. The kids arrive for pickup in front of the Maplewood Middle School by 1:15 and you are expected to pick up your child by 1:30. If you are even two minutes late, you will get charged somewhere between 10 and 15 dollars for each 15 minutes or so that you are late. I have noticed that some parents have made arrangements for a Kids Kamp counsellor to babysit for their kids and therefore I suppose you may not have to be there to sign them out but would authorize them to do that. Hope this helps. |

Thanks Wendy. Does anyone know of a local service that provides transportation from camps? If there isn't one - someone should do it. They could probably make a fortune! Anyone interested??? |

Tip, which camps do you think require transportation? As far as I know, the Y camps, Oak Knoll, etc. all have transportation. Since the middle school is pretty centrally located in Maplewood, I haven't heard of any problems. People do set up car pools, taking turns with the pick-ups and/or drop-offs. If you don't have a car, you could probably still find someone close by who is also sending their child/ren to Kamp. |

Wendy, Yes, I realize that most large camps have transportation. I was actually referring to Kids Kamp. I would probably need someone to transport from camp. Morning drop off would be okay - but I wouldn't be able to pick up. I would need someone to drop my kids off at my Dad's (in Maplewood). Carpooling would only work if I could drive someone's kids in the morning and they could pick mine up at 1:30. |
